floor welding

oh ok, because in a few weeks time i will be starting a restoration project of my 318i, and the driver side floor is completely rotted. so the entire driver side needs to be replaced. so i was told by a guy from youtube to use 20 guage for the floor and 18 guage for any support rails. but the thing is i would be removing the entire rotted section and replace it. rather than just use the sheet metal and patch. thats why i would like to know if to use the 18 guage since it much stronger. note: i will be cutting right through the floor and remove. hope you can help :(

i'm sorry.. can't seem to recall the sheet metal gauge. only remember it was galvanised steel.

e30boy, i'm honoured you approached me on this forum before embarking on your own restoration project. although the numbers you mentioned sound familiar, I can't say with certainty which metal gauge was used at different parts of my car. however, you can buy me a drink and share your expectations of this project. once I understand your needs, I'm certain I can point you towards the right direction. pls keep in mind most panel beaters will swear they can do a proper job, but their work quality varies. my number is 012 3086433.

mizhan thanks for the offer, but i am all the way in South America. A country called Guyana. as i start the restoration i will keep you updated. actually i am thinking to upload a few pics i have now of the car i took before i stripped out the interior.

oh dear.. and I presumptuously assumed you were from around here. in that case it is best you hook-up with E30 owners at your area and draw upon their experience in restoration. it will also be a good idea to read the BMW E30 Restoration Bible.

few e30's

lol, to be honest in Guyana there isn't alot of e30 around. we have more modern bmw's. so alot of ppl dont have them. only a few on the road, but the owners aren't so into the whole e30 culture like i am. they rather buy a new 3 series than to restore a old one lol. thanks for the recommendation too.

sharp eyes.. in addition to at least one ding on all body panels, left side of front valance has a bit of body and paint damage, obtained from one of the six workshops this car went thru. this won't be visible once the spoiler is fitted; it's still patiently waiting at the paintshop, to be fitted once the painter is ready to touch up all the dings. btw, here's what it looks like..
