Sifus,I bought e34 M20B25 manual last 3 years and since that day the 'clucking' sound come from the g/box. The sound become very obvious when the air cond compressor is on. But once I push down the clutch padle, the sound will go lower (almost no sound). For your info, I have replaced the gearbox once (the first thing I do when I bought this car) but the 'clucking' sound still same as previous g/box. The original g/box still with me.Now, seems like the sound become louder n louder. Sometimes I feel less confident on highway. Any potential failure if I continue to use it? Anybody know the rootcause? Anything I can do to fix it with lowest cost? I don't think changing the another g/box is right move now.Expert and sifu, I need some advise....

bro,
is the sound like marbles shaken in a container...?
if yes then don't waste money by replacing another gearbox, unless it's new:top:

m20 manual gearboxes exhibit this tendency with age.my previous e28 did this.my current e34 and e30 also does this.depress the clutch and the sound goes away right....normal

the sound gets louder when the idle is low...like when you switch the a/c on.

the cause...wear n tear wz age...the fix....i donno...neither does most expert mechanics.....perhaps a brand new gearbox.... if you can find one

exacely the same with my E36....my pomen said the sound came from the big bearing inside the g.box....and it's normal after a years......

and what bro WCJ319 said is true....still safe....

Besides wear & tear, I think the sound may also come from the gear oil. This happened in my case, with workshop wrongly putting in auto transmission oil.
Recommend good quality manual gear box oil (multi-grade). Too thin and the gearbox will be noisy.

Bro

We're neighbour kot. I've seen your car couples of time I guess. The w'shop is exactly in Bertam Putra area, very easy to locate. One day mebbe pekena teh tarik kot.. Alan Teh also can join too :top:

Try replacing your clutch, pressure plate and related bearings. I have encountered this many times with BMW manual transmissions, esp the getrag 240s.

The main culprits are usually weak spring on the clutch pressure plate and the clutch bearings. There is NO problem with your gearbox, based on what you have described. The sounds goes away when you step on the clutch, that's the number one clue right there.

My M40 has the same noise, but I got used to it after awhile. But recently, I get a klacking sound sometimes, more so when car hasn't been driven for a day or two. I wasn't sure if it was my gearbox or my driveshaft.

I had a new clutch set installed about a year plus back when I did auto > manual conversion. But I'm not sure if it includes the pressure plate and those related bearings you mentioned.

Bro,

Anyone know an expert workshop for gearbox service... guess mine is about the time to change clutch plate + bearings for M43. It giving similar noise as u said but only happens when i press the clutch.
