New to BMW

Hi Gurus,I've just got my first BMW and exploring on its computer gadgetry. One thing I noticed is the service info menu where it shows you the mileage and date. I could not really make sense that it shows - 35k with a date of 01/2013. The cars current mileage is 26k. Does it mean the next major service is 35k? Also it shows oil icon at 17k 01/2013. What does this mean and when should I service it ?
