Here's an inexpensive maintenance that yields good results.Front control arm, aka front lower arm, aka wishbone.

Item number 5 in the diagram above.

It's called Rubber Mounting for Wishbone, aka, control arm bush. The above version is slightly off-center, I believe from M3, which gives you some degree of negative camber in the front tires.

Mine was cracked, unbeknownst to me.

Got it replaced, and here are the improvements.

1. Reduced my front tire noise by 50% easily
2. Reduced my front ride vibration substantially
3. Improved steering feel - steering not so 'soggy' anymore

So, if you feel vibration in your steering wheel, this is potentially one of the culprits.

Since the front bush made such a dramatic improvements, I decided to check the same for the rear as well. Here's what I found...

Waaaaah, so kheng! How much rubber bush costs?
you figure if can use PolyUrethane replacement for
longer life or stay with natural rubber?

better riding I bet..... howda?

This is the rear trailing arm bush, aka RTAB.

Took it down, and saw this...

Notice the cracks around the center...

Both were in equally bad shape... ignore the jagged edges, which was caused by the removal process.

The RTABs are often neglected because they are labour-intensive to change, and the wear and tear happens gradually over time and is therefore hardly noticable.

After I changed my RTABs, the ride vibration was only slightly improved, but not as dramatic as the front. I was a little bit disappointed. Until I took that first corner...

When I take a turn, it feels like my car has a new rear suspension setup. It turns much, much better.

The bushes above are not expensive - check with your workshop.

The RTAB is often neglected - you may want to have yours checked esp if your car is a few years old.

The ride will improve, the steering will feel more precise and progressive, and you will discover new responsiveness from the tail.

My four new bushes have me grinning like an idiot...

hmmm... bro.... these 2 kinds of these bushes the normal one and the -ve offset
M3 version? So which is better? M3?

p.s.

what the total cost to change.. i tink i also gatal wanna go do it too.. hehehehe!

Aiyoh Lee, the way you hentam ur car - u should have known such things will wear!

You should have gone the PU way also...then ur grin even goes from ear to ear!

Since I am not familiar with E36...is the RTAB more correctly know as the subframe bush? please check those 4 bushes that indeed support the swing arm, which I call trailing arms.....

Btw, I am sure Jeff happy to see u....ahem!

Lee, I haven't shown you my racun????

Custom lower control arm bracket with PU bushes.. same offset as the M3 bush.. Less slack translate to even sharp turn in

BTW, the M3 offset bushes increase the CASTER. From what I know, increased caster oso increased the -ve camber during cornering.

And for E30 owners, this is also applicable.

Do remmeber, there are two types of lower arm bush. Both is called M3 offset bush. The right one is the one posted by Lee.

Not expensive. Just labour-consuming. So if you are really friendly with a workshop, they will do it for you. Some workshops either discourage this or turn it down.

The offset M3 bush, indicated by Elwine30, is probably the one you are looking for. It gives you some measure of caster, which you otherwise cannot achieve without a camber/caster plate like KMac for eg.

See the following photo for illustration. Note how the front of the arm is pushed more to the front as the rear is positioned with an offset.

Excuse me, I believe the word you are looking for is not hentam; it's driving enthusiastically. Which is actually good for the car.

Yes, I considered the PU bushes. But am currently enjoying and appreciating the civilised hushed sound over bumps. PU is in the pipeline, together with weight strip down, carbon fibre panels, widebody perhaps, etc, should I choose later to go down this route.

Thanks for the reminder on the subframe bush, which is different from the rear trailing arm bush. That is coming up next when I can find the time.

I admire your entrepreneurial engineering spirit - kudos. I did not know abt this product of yours earlier... Will consider it in my potential next evolution of the car (see above.)

Yes, it is indeed CASTER. My source of reference must have got it wrong, or I must have misunderstood it. Improved turn-in because of increased camber at turn-in caused by the caster.

Lee, where to get these bushes from? Any aftermarket products?

Check with your regular supplier, ask for M3 offset bushes for the front lower arm. I understand they are quite rare, so need to search for them.

Not aware of any after market products with the offset. Maybe Fabian can sort you out.

Am using the orginal bush myself currently, sorry can't help much. For my camber/caster, I have my K-Mac camber plates....

Guys, i am facing similar issue with my e39 98/03 and wonder if you could let me know the prices involved here for the front ? appreciate it
