Dear Sifus, I am looking at getting a 2004 e46.... what would you guys considered as low mileage or mileage too high to even consider when looking for a secondhand car?? Please post any other things to look out for when finding 2ndhand car.. plzzz.. danke Schon!!

Too many variables.. pengsan..

1. By default, BMWs gearbox is design to last 160k km as a rule of thumb, assuming not ATF change since day 1.

2. Average KL/Selangor car usage is about 30k per year, average yourself using existing odo reading over car age, while the Japanese recond is about 5k km per year.

3. If overhaul was done on both gearbox and engine, then you might reset the "mileage" for these 2 items.

Look for other clues which gives a good indication on the mileage clocked for the car because mileage can be tempered,
~ is the spare tyre still original/new Conti?
~ How worn is the brake pedal rubber cover?
~ How worn is the front/rear brake rotor?
~ Sludge sign under the engine oil cap?

2004 car should clocked 150k km if the 30k km/year formula is used. If below 120k km then is consider low mileage lor. If 150k km then, its its fair usage lor... but gearbox gonna kong anytime if ATF not change.. they sure tell u they change..

So good luck!

normally servicing engine oil is based on 5k/3 months or 10k/6 months basis. anything under 20k per year is consider low. say a 2002 E46 with 100k on clock, 14k a year is pretty low.

so in that case let say i wanna buy E46 2000/01 and the mileage clock below 150km is low ha.. interesting... by the way do u have any idea what is the reasonable price for E46 318i 2000/01. is 80k a reasonable price? thanx...

On the average, milage below 20,000km a year is relatively low while above 30,000km is high. As stated by other members above, service record and condition of the car both interior & exterior are important factors.

  1. Yes, the service records should be there if the car is service with AB from day one. Just provide the car registration number and AB is able to print out the full service record.
  2. AB charge between RM 150-200 depending on the type of diagnostic checks you intend to do.

oic... so normally let say i wanna buy a 2nd hand beemer and sent it to check.. so what check is recommended boss? wanna be safe and not be conned by agent later. Oh, so i just need to provide AB with the registration number and that's it? thanx for the info boss.. really helps a lot.

not necessary to have car checked by AB. any of the more reputable specialist workshops can do a check, tell you what needs to be changed and verify the mileage.

Low milage car does not promise you trouble free. Important is pre purchase careful check
