We had a special request to get a custom carbon fibre hood made for a customer's E92-LCI 335i.Thought some of you may be interested to see what goes behind making a Carbon Fibre hood, so sharing some of the pictures here:
This is the customer's ride now. Before the Custom Hood. Just got to love the black/chrome theme. Gives off a very subtle but menacing feeling.
First step was getting an OEM Hood.
Wasn't too sure the standard packaging was gonna cope with the journey ahead, so added some extra bubble wrapping, paying extra attention to the sharp corners.
Had to find another vehicle to note the mounting points. So we'd know which holes shouldn't be plugged up.
The first stage tooling to create an FRP replica of the hood. The FRP will be used to cutout the required design. So we can leave the OEM hood untouched.
The FRP hood.
The cutouts were made where the vents are supposed to go.
Adding in the vents and filler to give it a nice smooth finish. This will be used to create another mould, from which the Carbon Fibre hood will be made.
