Not really, if you drive in Mode 1 or 2. It is smooth like an E46 3 series with an auto transmission. If you are using Mode 4,5 or 6, you can feel the punch at the back. But you will like it so much I promise. As for the Mode 3 is what I daily use, I found that this is something in between. SMGII...umm I'm lovin' it!

P/S. Anyway! M3 CSL only with SMGII option. If manual is a better choice over the SMGII. Probably BMW would have both option for CSL.

Hi Calvin,

May I know What is the meaning of "CSL" M3 ? Is it that there is two three kind of M3 ?Pls confirm .TQ.

Andy,

There were 3 versions of the E46 M3 and they are as follows :

1. E46 M3 - coupe/cabrio with 6 speed manual or SMGII tranny
Link : http://www.rsportscars.com/eng/cars/bmw_m3.asp

2. E46 M3 CSL - coupe only with SMGII tranny (think of it as an M3 after a strict weight loss and conditioning program)
Link : http://www.rsportscars.com/eng/cars/bmw_m3csl.asp

3. E46 M3 CS - couple only with 6 speed manual / SMGII optional (think of it as a half-way house between the standard M3 and the CSL) - last and possibly the best of the breed! Also refered to as M3 Competition Package in some prints.

Which one to go for is only limited by your preference and budget!

Cheers,
VaN

hi Andy,

just an experience of mine.
Before i got the SMGII, i had always wanted a Manual 6-speed M3. It was hard to find one and so i went with the SMGII models.
it's been a year until now, no regret at all and in fact, i'm blardy lucky i dint find one manual tranny M3 back then.
SMGII works very much like the race car air-shifter box....air shifter box is one of the most ultimate race box tht i dreamt to have it on my GTR for everyday drive but its just too unpractical.
now, just imagine, you have 343bhp, a "High pressure hydraulic" shifter box, which you can choose the reaction speed even, to drive on the road every single day....is perfect...BMW has done a great job on the SMG.
If we were to custom somewhat similar to our dragster, easily costing RM80k and above.
We are using the 5 speed airshifter on our R32, the gearbox itself is so big, n costs us almost 100k for all the modification.....damn!!...now i like my SMGII:D
