I was told tat car tyres have certain lifespan. What does it really mean and how to check them?? Is there a time limit that after certain no. of years from the date of manufacture that tyres cannot be used?? Can any sifu advise on this??

date of manufacture is on tyre wall - 4 digits, first 2 is week no, last 2 is year.

Usual usable life is 4-5 yrs, i think, after which the rubber compound becomes hard.

Hi jeff67, Does it mean that we shouldn't accept tyres which are manufactured in yr 2001 or 2002 if we were to change the tyres now??

How many of us really check the date when we change our tyres??

The problem with tyres caught my attention when one of the tyres of my previous car 'peeled' off after using for only less than 1 year from new.

advisable to take tyres as soon as possible after date of manufacture, especially on a beemer when u have the tendency to floor it once in a while! 2001 and 2002 is definitely a no-no for me becos almost expired stock.
