Hello to all sifus & bros. Both my rear lights are leaking in rain water! I have shorted 4 bulbs in as many days because of the current rainy spell. My e39 is pre facelift with ori amber lights. Body workshop(not mechie) said he can 'try' to fix but no promises! He mumbled something about glueing something & that we can still remove the light cluster for service. My questions.1) Is this the usual $ saving way?2)will mechie have a better way eg. purchase of gaskets?3)Or just bite the bullet and facelift the tail lights? And will this solve the problem? Because it could be that the metal has distorted (1996 e39)The driver side is quite bad, after heavy rain, can see water on the wires & a small puddle in the space next to the battery. Also water in the bulb holes in the light cluster.I can don't drive the car in rainy weather but this is hardly the solution!!Thanks in advance for all replies. And congratulations to all for making this forum a positive experience!Cheers!

Introduce yourself first in the newbie section.

You better find another body workshop to fix your rear lights. The rubber seals have degraded and if you cannot buy the rubber seals, you can use another sealant material (the type use by air-con shop) to seal the leak.

or you can buy herbert"s spare rear lights. cheap cheap. what say you herbert

As i know, you can not service the rear light once masuk air. U have to change it. Changing to facelift set is a best way [better looking too], just be careful when your mechanic drill the hole.

Ah...I forgot that I have a pair of facelift rear lights. Finally....if you are keen to buy my facelift rear lights, let me know.

Thanks for bros quick reply.

My mechie says the body shop knows what he is doing i.e. "ta kow" cantonese for 'put glue' !! the mechie said if I bring to him he also "ta kow". my rear lights are pre facelift amber.

Is this the correct $ saving way?

Mechie also said cannot put facelifted light cover without circuit board. true?

My worry is where they "ta kow", on the metal body? in the light cluster? on the big rubber washer? Will it make the insides so messy that i cannot install the facelift lights when $ permits.

Sorry if i ask too many 'stupid' questions.

Cheers!1

You asked for advice and we gave you solutions. If your mechie says body shop know what he is doing, then go ahead and let him do it.

I have a amber preface lift rear light seating in my store roon doing nothing. Facelift the car once I got it and kept the old lights with me until now. Cheap cheap sell to you if you are interested.

This is true if you're taking about the cheap knock offs from China. The genuine Hella's have LED's (refereed to as 'Celis') and require ballasts (aka control units, you will need 1 for each tail light). These are included in the Hella upgrade kit, i.e.:

They look fantastic at night and the imitations don't come close as they use a normal fluorescent light.

Here's a comparison:
