Hey people,I just purchased a pre-loved E46 318i year 2000 and was doing the usual checks before I actually start driving it to work. I realized that I have a very light "kluk" sound coming from the rear and it is only there when I drive slow, very slow like approaching a junction or a speed bump. It happens when I am about to stop and also when I am starting to move. I have tried a search in the forum but mainly got other people's similar complaint but no answers. There is also a whining sound at around 60 - 80kmh. I tried changing rear diff oil but it did not help. Hope someone can shed some light on this issue of mine and also a reasonable place to get it fixed. ThanksJoey Low

That "kluk" sound probably come from your rear defferential.....too much gear free play. Try to re programme you gearbox, but don't expect much...most of the time it's doesn't solve your problem. Good Luck.

its very common with the E46s...have spent lots of money trying to solve it..finally still there..so i hav chosen to live with till i part with the car!

regards

I don't think it is the rear shocks as they are pretty new looking (BOGE branded ones) and was maybe changed at 88K(according to AB service record) now 103K. I think I will have my mechanic take the shocks down over the weekend and see if the mountings need changing.

If it is a rear diff problem won't changing the whole rear diff solve the problem?

If the sound happens when you're about to stop or just starting to move, then it could also be your rear brake caliper - sometimes one of the main caliper bolts can become loose/fall off. This will cause the caliper to move about in its seating to cause the light knock. Could also be that the pad isn't seated properly in the caliper (especially with poor quality aftermarket pads). I've experienced both on previous cars and they drove me nuts until it was solved.
