Whoa.... scaring the s.hit outta me......

Recalled I was driving to PG, then Alor Star on my 6yr old tyre..... and was doing 150-160 then......

Still, Nikki Wa Wa's 3 month old tyre was pulverized on the drive up north..... so how in this case....??

Will change my other 2 tyres within this week, Contis again..... heard they are ok tyres..... cozt of replacing 2 tyres is cheaper than cost of repairing / knocking car after accident.....
What a coincidence. My close shave happened when my family and I were heading to Penang and Alor Star, from Kajang. The aquaplan incident happened near Penang.

That was a case of footwell protruding into the tires, from what i heard, so nothing to do w the tires' age.

By the way, it was my wife who was driving when the aquaplan incident occurred. I was too tired and asked her to take over the wheel.

All I can say is, it was a very defining moment for me as a passenger with no direct control over the aquaplanning vehicle ('cos my wife was the driver, not me) and with my entire family in the car. All I could do was hope for the best as my balls shrunk... The car was about to hit the railings on the fast lane at high speed when suddenly my wife somehow managed to regain the car's composure.

Lesson learnt: Don't skimp on your tyres. My family and I were lucky that this lesson didn't cost us a thing other than a good fright.

Rear tyres were 6 years old, the treads were still good though I have begun to suspect they've starten to harden. So here's a graphic example of what old tyres can do when it punctures :

Puncture, rims run on tyre and shreds....

Regained control before I hit the side wall so no damage to my UDM .

Good topic Lee,

BTW, where did you get the 2yr benchmark info from? I'm curious bro...

Anyway, I guess I'm safe as my tyres never last for more than 13mnths anyway.......

2 years is ok.... 3 years is pushing it...( especially if not driven often)

I once crashed my friend's Lotus coz he thought his 4 year old Yoko's "still got a lot of thread" but were rock hard and I was STUPID enough not to check em first.....
Expensive lesson!

Your case and my case are never a problem of old tires. Just not enuf thread!

My Conti - 6 months, beautiful in dry, MURDEROUS in wet, spinning like JPM warming up for Australia F1, LOL.

My dragon - 12 months, cannot take my driving anymore, (after all, they did go to track) I threw them away, (no offence, just my personal experience)

Am waiting to see how long my Yoko Neova can last...

But was shocked to hear some people have tires many, many years old.

As wglee said, if you follow the official so-called benchmark, it's supposed to last 8 to 10 years. After the recent incident, that will be the last time wglee follows that benchmark, I'm sure. His was just 4 years old.

I did not get the number 2 from any official benchmark. But I guess up to around 2 years should be ok for most people. Anything more would start to look iffy.

The dangerous situation is when old tires look ok threadwise because they are not driven very often. People forget that the rubber hardens, much like old jogging shoes.

Good to hear more people sharing their experience as above. This seems to be an area that the official 'benchmarks' have overlooked. 10 years? No way.

Now.... heres something interesting to find out....

I have changed two new tyres, Contis.... my tyre shop recommends to put it in the front....

But since our car is rear wheel driven, shld we not put new tyres at the rear?? So that we have more grip/traction???

Pls share yr views.... thnx.

Not to mention the driving style of our road users?
But, but not many of us drive can drive like the way you do....

Ok, now for my input.... :D

I usually change my tyres at around the 2 year mark irregardless of the thread depth. And no, money do not grow on trees for me, but I value the life of my family and me more.

Noticed that at the 2 year mark, the tyres would have harden considerably. I have the advantage of comparing against another car of mine. An easy knock of the knuckle against the tyre wall is enuff to convince me.

I once tried to pull the change of tyres to the 3 year mark and suffered a "slow" tyre blow-out at speed, luckily it was a FWD car and affected one rear tyre. Managed to control the car and stop at the roadside to change it.

Just last week, on my PV6, with tyres that were installed in January 2005, I suffered another puncture when I hit a stone on the Elite. Went to repair the tyre, found a small crack in the rubber. I ditched all the tyres (even though the rears had about 3/4 thread left) for 4 new Contis.... (ok OMGWTF, will heed your advice on the Conti's handling when old)

Ok, ok, it was my rear that blew, the one with the 3/4 thread left.... go figure.
