Dear sifus,Im driving an E46 318i 2004 make. On Thursday I serviced and changed engine oil. Saturday drove to Penang. Up until now, I believe i have driven for at least 800km to 1000km. This morning I checked the lever, my engine oil has dropped to 'minimum'.No white smoke is detected. My water level has not dropped. Is it time to overhaul? 85000 mileage. My SECOND ISSUE: my car when breaks, it doesnt come to a stop smoothly but it breaks with a creaking or popping sound. I consulted a bimmer foreman and he said it is normal. I am unsure of this because it is weird if a car brakes, it doesnt stop naturally but with a creaking or bopping sound. Thanks in advance.Sincerely,

Brakes are primary safety, please have it checked by experienced workshop. Brake disc/rotor are not expensive RM120 for brembo OEM or RM250 for BMW original, also quality pads such texlar or jurid are 85-120 per pair

As for your oil consumption it's a common issue with N42/N46 engine due to valve seals are worn. Repair cost at experienced workshop about RM1400

Thanks bro . Sorry for the late reply. The brake disc/rotor, id changed it 2-3 months ago.

On the oil consumption, it could be the oils seals. Need to send for checking. I serviced my car by changing the o I l. Now at, 1800 km of driving, the yellow light oil indicator is already showing. Quite critical.

By the way, there is no white smoke upon starting my car.

I wss told by a workshop known to the sifus here that I need 3-4k to overhaul the engine.

Hmmm.....

wht kind of oil u r using? Is it the right recommended viscosity? Whts the look of your tail pipe like, dry? ... Btw, I hv clocked 200K on my ride with no issue...

Mine too, car make 2005 clock down around 86000. After service n run over 2000km my oil lever drop and need to top up another liter... No white smoke also... No leaking

it is a common issue with N42/N46 engines...mine is also having oil consumption issues. Read somewhere a fellow forummer did a valve seal job for 1.4k while I was quoted 2.5k from my mech for the job which includes top overhaul. If you're using full syn it will burn faster as fully syn are thinner. If budget doesn't allow try changing to semi syn first.

Hope this helps.

Iceduke, please share your experience with Shell HELIX HX7 15-40 and Pennzoil 15-50 did those semi syn reduced the oil loss? If yes, I have 2 bottles of Shell HELIX HX7 5ltr pack for sale at RM80 each since my car run well on Shell Ultra 5-40 / Castrol Edge Sport 0-40 fully syn

Bro Dzul: using Ravenol as the workshop carries it. Viscocity? Urmnm tail pipe looks dry.

Bro ice: I believe im using semi (I remember I was told im using the type which allow me to drive in a lower mileage as compared with the other type.

My observation: if I dont accelerate much, my oil level will drop to minimum after 3-4k of mileage. As I drove at PLUS highway with 120-135/h for the 800km. Would this be a factor why it dropped so significantly?

I had exp just like yours. You will first see that dorp of engine oil as you drive over the weeks or so. Later, I can bet that you will see some white smoke....you would not realize it until someone (whom you know) follow you behind notify you.....when you accelarate ...there will be some..

Conclusion: Time has come for you to have to change the valve seal cover....there are several of it. I did mine .....no drop of engine oil until next service...no top up done. Damage in RM$$$$$ = close to RM1,300...

Care to share where you did your valve seals for benefit of many here?

I wouldn't mind paying a little bit more for a job well done :)... may visit him to get mine done soon, oil consumption is kinda putting a damper on fully maximising my bimmer.. lol

Can I say you recommend me? :)

I hate mechanic when do explanation and put you in fear situation if we don't do this......you be stranded la...and so on.
