Hi everyone! To start off let me roughly introduce myself, firstly i joined this forum as i had bought an e30 year 1991 from a friend of a friend in the forum here, bought it for a second car (planned to drive it occasionally only), i am a civil servant officer, based in Kajang, Married with a son, i am 35 years of age. Since i'm very very new to this, i have a question if i may ask to all the sifus in here,,,,Well,,,the car that i bought a few months back, I did not start the car for a month or so,,,later i found that the battery was dead,, so i changed the battery! The thing is,, it starts,,but its not like before,,,there's black smoke and it seems that when i drive the rpm (not working after i change the battery) is not stable its Flunctuating and that the engines stops off and on.What may be the reason? Is it the spark plug? Do you know any workshop in kajang that can look into this! Thanks

oh dear.. sounds like you need to have your car looked at very soon. the black smoke and poor idling could be caused by several things; but don't worry, not all problems are life threatening :) dunno about kajang but i've heard from friends there's a very competent mechanic at bandar tasik selatan.. perhaps members here who know the place can guide you there, as it's not too far from kajang. if you're willing to drive to damansara, there's another mechanic i can hook you up with.

zzzaaron,

Mind my stupidity, but where is taman segar actually? I need to send the car asap, worried that if taking a long time in would deterioates! (not sure about the spelling though) :)

Welcome to the forum.

Just drive the car around and let the ECU to learn back the driving habit.

when the battery is dead, the ECU forgot the previous habit and is trying to learn.

If the RPM is eractic, check the AFM and ICV..

Is there such thing for an M40? Care to elaborate ? Thanks

Yes, its possible. But check any vacuum leaks as well, plus it could b ur afm flap sticky after 1 month lay off n dis can cause ur black smoke, rough idle, engine stops...

Hmmm I still don’t understand on how the ecu will learn the driving habit as M40 components are mostly mechanical and ECU will only send/receive signals to/from various components. But I second you on the probability that most likely the problem is due to (vacuum leaks or sticky faulty components).

The M40 ECU is the engine management of the car.

It have works based on various sensors feedback such as:-
1. crankshaft sensor
2. AFM vanes position
3. AFM air inlet temperature
4. Throttle body position
5. O2 sensor on the exhaust manifold

Based on the above information, the ECU will optimized the firing condition of the fuel injection and spark plug.

In the event of failure of the crankshaft sensor, the ECU will shutdown the fuel pump and spark plug.

It does have a small memory in the module to store the mapping of the engine and driving condition.

BTW, I am refer to M40 engine and not the older version of the E30.

I have known somebody actually plug-in some gadget to simulate a low temperature at the AFM in order to advance the firing of the spark plug. It actually work for a while but somehow later, some of them comment that it back to normal. i.e engine rev is back to normal and pickup is gone.

There are some people who have actually experience that their car is more responsive after they go for a aggressive drive (carbon burning). Now sure how true this is all as I have personally have not done it myself.

For my E36-316i (M40 engine also) , I sometime get good fuel consumption but poor response but sometime get average FC but better response after going for a drive with the club..

Mechanics in Kajang/Putrajaya/Serdang/Semeneyih

Its best for me send the car for checking, it seems ! I personally dont know, as mentioned by all in the replies.

Just wanna to find out any workshop in kajang/Putarajaya/Serdang are who can actually into my car (e30 1991)?

I've been asking around and cant seem to find one!

Really appreciate it!

You can try BMWorld (Ah Wai), it's not so far from you. Desa Tun Razak, the industrial area next to Bandar Tasik Selatan LRT. Well known shop, good at e30s.

there are none any reliable foreman nor workshop in this parameter as mentioned ........

if tukar minyak hitam ..ada ...for minor work ..

but for major work ..NONE ....

Running as usual

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to update, i managed to send the car to Ah Wai yesterday (BM World), the problem has been fixed. What he did was, he said that the air four (4) or something like that, the one attached to the air filter is spoilt. He change it (For rm 400, used), and changed the spark plug as well, and erything went back to normal.

Next thing that i need to do is change the (rear) wheel bearing, i thought that the sound was because of the tyre, but it seems not! It would cost roughly rm270 per side. (That is what i have been told).

Thank you u guys for the info/comment/advise/suggestions etc.

bro, this is not very helpful. :stupid:. Next time take picture if you dont know what is the thing.

The only thing that is attached to the air filter is the AFM. He most probably took your AFM in exchange for the used AFM.

BTW, it NOT "air four".. It Air Flow Meter.

haha regular customers of ah wai will know that is exactly how he pronounces air flow. anyways glad it worked out for you, see you around there sometime maybe (probably)

:)

Thank You! Next time i'll just attach the picture of it!

One more thing Ah wai advise me to change the current air filter (KNN) to the standard one, currenyly he does not have one. Anyone in here who knows where i can it one, please let me know K! If possible on what range is the price should be?

Anyway, Thanks,

Sure glad that i came to know this forum and some of the forumers! :adore:
