HELP!!! - Top overhaul or engine replacement

Need sifus suggestions & reccommendations,Last week my bos with his E46 325, year 2004 (same as mine, only 1 month older than mine !!!!...kacauuuuuu) experienced high temp. & like always sent the car to AB Kuantan. First they rectified expansion tank leak. Replacement done. After awhile driving, temp went high again, and again sent to AB Kuantan....they found 5th cylinder got water coming in.2 suggestion from AB, 1. Engine replacement (32K) 2. Top overhaul (RM?).I need feed back from sifus, is there will be any performance drop or what so ever side effects if proceed with top overhaul. And of course best reccommendation by BMW is engine replacement. Consider my bos not a rough/fast driver, but alway go for long distance driving...Wow...now I understood why BMW = Banyak Makan Wang....

I guess that you got to open up the engine first to ascertain what is exactly wrong.

Based on my limited knowledge,overheating can cause:-

i) blown gasket, which means changing the gasket only...of course while you at it you can consider a top overhaul( depending on the car's mileage)

ii) cylinder head crack.....you can either change brand new cylinder head or get a recon one...E36 costs RM11k(new) vs RM3k++ (recon), E46 cost dunno

iii) worst case scenario is engine block + cylinder head koyak.....then you got to change engine...either new or recon.

Any Kuantan forumer that can help Hafizzul here.

Why do u send the car to AB?? AB charge = 2.5X price outside workshop.

Thanks for response. Ill personally will go and help my bos to find what exactly happening this Friday & up-date you guys later. For time being this is the only info Ive got.

Why send to AB? hehehhe...his previous 2 BMW bought new and maintained all the way at the same AB that one i cannot comment.

Anyway thanks....need as much info/impact if proceed with top overhaul or any other aspects that need to be take into account....

you should get 2 years warranty with unlimited mileage from AB.
Yes, the outside workshop can do it too at lesser cost but do they have the special tools to do it.

Probably just a blown head gasket, which happened as a result of the previous overheating. No need to replace engine just top overhaul, if done properly the engine will feel bit stronger than before even. If he's such a good customer AB should offer him a good discount, who knows maybe it's their fault that they didn't catch it earlier.

hi, question is if this car has been maintained all the way by AB, they didn't seem to catch it, likesaid Cempaka... and its so lame of AB to conclude wt engine replacement????????????????? so quick? E46?? they(AB) should take some responsibility too...

It should be that way, but again....AB is still AB.... same as our gear box issue...lifetime warranty right? .. will seek the best out of the worst of AB ..thanks guys...

Bro, Normally overheat due to cooling system, most cases we can see the point of water leaking, if tak nampak air bocor but water in radiator always low level, its must be water leak to cylinder.
Not only BMW, other japanese car pun sama.My suggestion...top overhaull and replace gasket kits.
