Hardly any Classic BMWs at Classic Car Club? Why?

As a member of 3 Classic Car Clubs in Malaysia, it is indeed surprising to note that there are hardly any Classic BMWs in the meets. Last Thursday I was in one of the meets and there again no Classic BMWs.Where are these cars anyway ?? I am sure there are lots of E24s, 2002s as well as 3.0CSi, CLs etc.Any feedback would be appreciated, particularly from those who own such classics.Hatish Mayer

Which 3 classic car clubs are you a member of? What are the entrance requirements? I own a 1982 E24, would I be eligible?

I think only BMW 2002 qualify, Not yet for E12,21 of 24.

I guess you'r car has to be 25yrs and above to qualify as a classic.

Generally speaking, the category of Classic cars are those which are 25 years and above based on year of make NOT date of registration. However, those having old cars of 22 or 23 years of age are most welcome to join the clubs. The only difference being those with 25 years or more can apply for 80% discount on roadtax, subject to JPJ conditions. Those less than 25 will have to wait a while until they reach age of 25 years.

So, please come and join the classic car club, as official/unofficial club member. Naturally, to become official member, there are membership fees of about RM130 per year, depending on the preference of club.

I have been in vintage group since 1979 in MSVCR, MG Car Club then we are the early bunch of group form the Royal Malaysia Vintage & Classic Car Club was quite lately so busy and we are the group to approch the Agong for the Royal title then Negeri Yang di Pertuan Besar and the Goverment for the Road Tax discount. To qualify for the discount depands on the rare model of the car and not any car and must own more then one under the same owner and to be inspected by Puspacom with many conditions to go through. I myself don't go for the discount since I only own small CC cars, Triumph Spitfire 4 1965 and an Austin 1300 1973 unless I have a Jaguar then I will go for it.

One reason why you don't see many bimmers at classic car shows is because there are just not many running around. Most of the time these cars just get wrecked or breakdown and then left to rot. I'm sure we all can recall the few instances where we saw o2's and e12's left to rot in old plantations and housing estates because nobody could care less about these cars then(early 90's).

It also doesn't help much that many of these cars were not very rustproof, so just a little neglect could cause great damage. Only recently has there been a resurgence or shall I be bold enough to use 'RENAISSANCE' of old bimmers. But for some models it was to late. The switch on the electric chair was already turned on!

We don't even see any Isseta's or BMW 700's on the road. These early 60's cars never even made it pass the 80's here. They just were left in a state of disrepair and rusted to the ground. Lets hope in the many years to come current (almost) classics like the e24, 23 and past models do not suffer the same fate as their predecessors.

Yeah... Although there has been renewed interest in older BMWs of late, i'm always sad to see neglected e23, e24 etc just lying by the roadside n left to rot...

The only offshoot that I'm hoping for is that since the interest in these cars is there, there should be better availability of parts for these 'classics'...

Yes, parts for E23 are available but are deminishing by the days. Bomin is no longer ordering any parts for this car. What ever they have in stock once sold will not be replenished, unless you order it thru them. Same apply to First Division which have more stock for older model like E21, E23, E24 and E28. If the parts is available in their store, you can still buy them at old stock price. They do replenish the hot selling items like absorber mounting, oil filter etc. However, the new stock's price will goes up a lot since the Euro went up.

Just for info, the going rate for a E21 front absorber mount is now RM390/each. This is original BMW parts because BMW Mobile Tradition still sell parts for older BMW. Therefore, if you can't find a part because no one has stock, you can go to Auto Bavarian and ask them to order the part for you (at a premium of course).

Yeah, I do agree that it is sad to see some old E23/E24 lying outside some of the panel beater because the owner gave up in fixing them!

:rofl: back in early 1980s there are vintage BMW's but were in Singapore imported by a Doctor from Uganda works in Kandang Kerbau Hospital who owns at least 10 vintage of really rear Model such as Jaguar SS100 2 units I read somewhere only a few built in the world, Fiat Belila if I am not wrong, Austin Cummy and so on I can'nt remember but had some photos taken during our meets now I think the Fiat is in Penang and the Doctor had migrated to Canada well more then 15 years back and he did bring the car for the Vintage Equatoral rally years back, the BMW is if I am not wrong is the 327/8 something like that so silence and fast car lovely I will post pictures if I get it from my album. sayang he left a nice friendly friend even offered to stay at his house when I go to Singapore then but did'nt lah. I will try to upload pictures of BMWs vintage if I can get it in now if not later of resizing. Earlier days people are fond of British cars you see of the British here but all those lovely cars left the country earlier then we grow up to catch them such as Rolls, Bentleys, Logandas, Buggatis, Mesartis and so on, then in the 70's was offered such as Cooper S, Jaguar E type, (500 Ringgit) now worth 100 over thousand, Fiat 850 Spiders, Lotus Elans, Alfa Spiders, Volvo Sports,MGBs at the range of 3 to 5k all these cars I can'nt afford Brother later only had my Spitfire and Austin which I keep till today. In the 80s was also offered a Porsche Targa less then 15k takut beli and no money and even in the early 80s got 1 911 porsche for 40k all done up in germany overhaul I tested the car but who to finance me all gone by history. I use to have an MGA in the 80s too but sold it after 6 yrs with me now left only 2 enough no time to jaga and had a lazy son.
