GM module

My friend's e39 is diagnosed by workshop that the GM module kaput and caused the error light.I would like to check if the GM module is general use across the e39 model? Do we need to code the module if we replace an used one?
 
GM module is associated with central locking etc. Gearbox is EGS.
 
Last time my e46 GM faulty and i changed to an used set from chop shop..yes it need to recode

if not mistaken it was rm700
