Appreciate any feedback from the members. It's been nearly a year already facing with this problem. The thing is, it happen on and of. After spirited driving or sometimes just normal driving, my car just cannot be started, when ignition key turned on nothing happened, tried many times without avail. Need to wait for more than 15 minutes, try again, walaaa the car can start as if nothing wrong with it. Nothing wrong after that, the problem will only come back a month or two, with the same result as mention, on and on again with a gap here and there.Check with my mech, it doesnt appear to be the starter and ignition, he suspect that it could be the wiring, but that's the thing "wiring" a lot need to be diagnose one by one. Anybody face or experience the same problem I have.Feedback please to shorten the search, or it could be a wild goose chase. Thanks guys

this might sound crazy....xometime I just slammed the door hard. after that ok liao.

zoggee yes it does sound crazy.

Try looking at the ignition key connector. What you need to do is disconnect it and plug it back again. Make sure that you hear a click when the connector is fully inserted back.

My car is a 325 year 94.
Jarance, change that already and also change the thing at the auto gear lever, cant remember what it's call. Obviously not the starter..What else

yoke,

Here is wiring circuit of the starter. See below..

From the look of the circuit, it look like the starter is only enable if the STARTER RELAY is energised. This RELAY is control by the position of the gear shift. i.e. "PARK" or "NEUTRAL" position. In other position you cannot crank the starter. It look like the alignment of the gear shift position is slightly off. If it misaligned, you have to jack up the car and adjust at the bottom of the car near the gearbox shift.

ps. I actually encounter once when the mechanic misalign it and the car was actually moving on the ramp when it jack up when the engine was started. It gave me a fright.

In order to confirm this is the problem, try to shift the gear shift to Neutral or PARK position when you cannot start. Other than that check the wiring for the fuse or the power relay that enable the cranking of the starter.

I think with the wiring diagram, most of the wireman can diagnose the problem. it is relatively quite simple.

BTW, this only applied for AUTO transmission. Its your an AUTO?

Mine is an auto, thanks for the diagram, I'm gonna pass it to my mech, but how to explain to him in layman's term.
Thnaks jarance

OK I will try to answer you in laymen term.

Looking at the circuit first..

1. Starting from the top right, Fuse F26 provide the 24VDC power for the Starter Relay.

2. If the 24VDC supply is available, depending on the position of the "Automatic Transmission Range Switch", the contact will closed and supply power to the Starter Relay. The contact of the Automatic transmission Range Switch will only make or close when the range is at "PARK" or "NEUTRAL" position.

Note: This relay is most probably situated inside your fuse box. The fuse box should be located under the far end of the right hand side of the engine compartment (nearer to passenger side).

3. If the starter relay is energised, contact will make between terminal "6" and "2".

4. This will allow the 24 VDC supply to go to the slave relay of the starter.

5. Looking at the circuit from top left, you can see the circuit from the Ignition Switch. When you turn the switch to "START", it will supply voltage to the Starter relay. If the starter relay is not energised, the voltage will not go to the Starter.

6. If the Starter is energised, then the voltage will be supply to the starter's Auxilliary relay (Power Side), This Aux relay will colse the power contact and draw high Amp to crank the engine.

BTW, this work should be carried by an Auto wireman.

chief...

kalau tak salah .. that one got something to do with the starter... innitially it will not bother u much .. ones in a while ... as time go .. then it will show its colour.. if bad time dia tak start kat tempat banyak org ...chief , tell u what .. next time if u have this problem ...knock the head of the started witha screwdriver and try to start... it use to be carbon contact .. try ur luck .. best of luck as well.. cheers

u need to go to yr wiring sifu...its a problem with the relay...should cost u like rm80 or so...gimme a buzz if u wanna know where i did mine

Shiva, thks for the info. If I'm not mistaken I've change the starter, will have to check with my mechanic though.
What I do know, I've change, the connection on the igniton key (cost me RM2++), change something at the auto gear lever (dont remember what its call) but it's quite filmsy like plastic circuitery. Accoding to my mech, the starter has no problem, as when the thing happen, there are no current going to the starter. He's quite puzzle with the thing also. Have already inform him on the possiblility of some switch on the gearbox (cant really remmember this as someone mention it to me on passing).
At wits end already. Somemore sold my car already, I can choose to just let it go, but I choose not to gave the new owner a bad experience of owning a UDM. Most of the wear and tear (bar the gearbox and engine) has been done. So this one problem is really a pain in the ass.
The thing is, when it happen, you just relax or go have a smoke for around 20-30 minutes and then when you try to start again walla as if no problem it ignited and the problem will be gone for 2-3 month (depends sometime longer). I suspect it happen when the car is really hot (or moving for quite sometime) then when try to start it would come to that problem.
But WHAT CAUSE THE PROBLEM???????

Okay guys...i was just reading this thread...would like to share my problem..i drive a 1991 e30 m40 ... when my car idles during traffic lights n all the engine sometimes dies(happens an average of maybe once or twice a day)...and sometimes..when it dies..i am not able to start it back...alrdy checked the starter n thts not the problem..the only way to start it is by using a screwdriver manually at the engine bay..or wait a while as what yoke does...this can sometimes be inconvinient because it has happend to me before during a jam...still cant figure what is the cause of it... any info would be appreciated

just curious how do you kick the starter manually with a screwdriver? Might be a useful tip in case of emergency.

Okay same problem happened to my volvo 850, dunno it's applicable to BMW or not. My mechanic replace the item called "Power Stage", the small item attached to the ignition cable. Hmmmm its located inside the engine bay.

Cheers.
