My mechanic normally changes my brake pads to original but i don't like what he is using (no idea what they are though because i've never seen him actually change them)those front brake pads produce a huge amount of black dust ..... do the original brake pads do this?i don't hit the brakes hard as the car is only driven in town and rarely driven very fast and yet after just 1 day of going to and from work, the rims are black with dust .......i hear alot of members are using ATE .... where do i get it from and does it produce a huge amount of dust?Bavarian Auto only sells the original front ones at RM243/- per set (BMW 318i 1995 E36 M43 Manual) but they don't know if the brake pads produce alot of dust or not ...... sighi want to know where i can find some brake pads that are reliable but don't produce a huge amount of black dust, please indicate brand, location and approximate costthanks alot!

I thinks tat is normal lar... but if your ride got some leaking oil such as power steering
leaks or engine oil leaks might produced a lots of dust paste to the rims, that's why
front rims more dusty than rear rims... well... i thinks so.

May be other Sifu can give the comments...

it's just dust ... a ton of it .....no leaks at the brakes ... carefully checked that when they changed the suspension ..... a couple of weeks ago ....

i've seen other peoples BMW's and they don't seem to have as much dust on the front wheels ......... my brakes are good but just wanted to know if there is any way to still have braking power without a ton of dust ....

i'm quite sure i will need to change the front brake pads at the next service in a couple of months (normally at each service either the front or the rear brake pads are changed and since the rear were changed last service, means next service the front pads will be changed ....)

i just wanted to know if there are any other alternatives out there ........

Crappy brake pad = no dust, low miu, low friction, no bite
Power brake pad = lots of dust, high miu, high friction, good bite

you can't get both world at the same time.
Did you try the new Ceramic brake pads?

try the original JURID brake pad, good braking and not so much dust.it also depend on how far or how often u applied the brakes.if i do alot of hard driving then i can see a little bit of dust....normal driving a week to really see alot of dust

The original BMW brake pads DO produce more brake dust as they have higher metallic content than all the other aftermarket and OEM brands.

No issues, just clean your wheels more often!

the reason why the front wheels seem to have more brake dust is because brake force acts on the fronts more. that's also why the front discs are bigger than the rears. and also why you tend to need to change the front pads and discs more often than the rears.

+1! agreed!

bmw oem brake pads are the best for normal street driving. works immediately from cold. racing or track pads have less dust, but they have an optimum working temperature. don't work well when cold.

mebbe you can try out EBS green pads. good compromise between. less dusty than stock, slight loss in bite, but not as bad as race or track pads. not too expensive too...

install a dust shield cover...

pls don't as you stand the risk of your discs warping. dust shield covers work because they block off the discs from the outside of the rims. which means that your discs will not get the airflow when moving, and retain heat. so over a long period of hard braking, they will warp. and you will have to spend money to buy new discs.

if there is no dust, you should be worried. Why others have clean rims? Because they clean them everyday. Some even with a toothbrush :D

Terri, brake dust is absolutely normal and it shows that your brake is actually biting well. What you can do to progressively clean up the brake dust is rinse the rim and spray the disc brake with water when the car has been parked overnight. Do not, I repeat, do not spray water onto the disc brakes when you just came back from a short/ long journey as the disc surface is hot. This will warp your brake disc.

mebbe because you didn't use your brakes that much - it varies with the driving style.

there will be rust on the disc surface :( dono why
than drive a while and they will dissapear

hi all...!!!

i got d same problem with Terri, a lots of black dust on my front rims.Solution:- clean up more often:top:

But i've got problem with the sound the brakes makes when we play with the brake during slow moving/jam(annoying drone sound, tak tahan rasa ngilu...).
People said certain brake pads produce less sound, is it true?
Anyone know how to solve this problem? The Sifu's?!!?! Some advice please.....:wink:

yes, nothing beats original. so, you are good. all bmw are prones to brake dust. maybe some cars you saw, just got their wheels or car washed. :). Mine, after 2 days it's black. :(

bro sam ,
Newton's 3rd Law : For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.:listen:

Yup. Sounds like inertia. But it helps to tell u are stationary.

I use black rims. What irritates me the outer gets pretty ugly.
It tells me to always keep the car clean.
Not too bad if u hv a lot of time to kill and don't mind wasting water.

Hand brake shoe. It never grips even when I change them. Any idea?
