Dear sifus,As I write this, I'm currently at Ingress Auto waiting for the judgement of what's causing the noise in my end 2008 pre-LCI E90 320i when I accelerate. The noise is increases in volume as the car speeds up. The suspect it's the rear axel that is faulty and is now confirming it. If confirmed, the replacement part will cost RM10k+ as my UDM's warranty has ended in Jan this year.As my mileage is less than 60k (58,950 to be precise), IA will try to appeal on this to BMW AG and request for a discount on the part, judging from the fact that rear axels on 3-series for a car this age & mileage done is rare. Will have to see how much discount they can offer... :-(While waiting for that, would like to ask the sifus here if anyone can recommend a reliable & professional 3rd party BMW service workshop so that I can obtain a "2nd quote" for the replacement of the rear axel should the part price after discounts from BMW AG is still on the high side.Thank you in advance for the guidance.

if you mean the rear diff....then it is highly unlikely unless you have covered inter galactic space miles.but since only 60k kms done on a 4 year old car...then sumtin is not right.check for diff fluid loss.i am thinking this to be the rear wheel bearings?this can be easily identified by any competent mechanic.

i suggest optimum auto damansara kayu ara.....

moots ... do not say its unlikely. My car's rear diff started humming by 5K. I got it changed under warranty. This is not new. Ask any BMW SC staff in the workshop. Its something they know that happens ... Basically, BMW does sell shit and then say sorry warranty is over. Then perhaps they will give you a so called DISCOUNT as if that cures the problem. Look at another forumer whose brake sensor kaput in a mere 70K. Is that normal? Oh JOY!

im having the same problem here..changed tyre and also the bearing but still the humming persisted..The noise increases as the car speeds up...been told that my axle is in problem but still no mechanic dare to conform it...also ive read in another thread that suggested the culprit could be the longshaft..please do update me if the axle change solve the problem..

Check the diff first. Yes, a wrongly installed prop can also hum like a bad diff. I found out about the prop when bloody AB Glenmarie replaced my diff and the car still hummed the same. They installed the prop WITHOUT using the proper jig etc. real idiots. Had to send car back for another day.

Will do bro. I'm now seeking advice frm 3rd party professional repair centres. Will have an answer tomorrow and sall update accordingly.

Bro check Mscope in batu caves. Look up Mr Tan and see what he thinks. I had a similar problem with rear humming noise. Turns out it's the tyres instead. He explained the difference between gear box and tyres noise. thoroughly saved me thousands$$$. Btw it was diagnosed as rear axle noise from An "official" workshop and they did advise me to get a second opinion b4 doing the repairs.

Is this noise audible right from the beginning (i.e. from standstill accelerating all the way up to whatever highway speeds?)

I'm experiencing a similar noise effect however it only comes in at speeds of 100kph and above.
It was deduced as tire noise. My car is still under warranty, however am skeptical - as could this just be a tactic to avoid warranty claims?

Tyre noise and a faulty differential sound VERY different la ... one is more metallic. Higher pitch noise.

Guys, do you all change your rear diff oil?

Change when for me my car is 1.5 months old already got sound? LOL! Usually when its making noise, the problem is the pitch/mesh of the gears. That is what the SC says. Got sound, no good. Bad juju ...

My Avanza rear diff also claimed before but the humming sound it produced was at specific speed i.e. 80~83kph. Below or beyond that speed, no sound at all. The bill comes up to about RM4k but good thing is it was under warranty that time.

Problem is a top techie from BMW Malaysia side knows this problem exists for the E90 ... it is a problem that occurs enough times. That top guy from BMW says the diff problem will start to whine at 60-80 kmh ... mine was just like that.
