Hi Guys,

I've been experiencing a 'clicking' sound from the steering when moving at very slow speeds (below 10km/h) especially in traffic jams. This 'clicking' thing is noticeable when the steering is straight and some slight adjustments of 2 to 3 degrees is made by either turning left of right. The 'clicking' can barely be heard but easily felt on the steering. Brought up this issue to the SA at Ingress recently and was told that it is normal for cars with Integral Active Steering. Has any forumers experience this before?

How new is your car? If it is still under warranty then quickly go rectify. Without warranty, its bad news. The steering rack is very expensive. Mine was changed during warranty and the bill was about 19k.

I always tell the service people, "is this your professional opinion about bmws (when they tell me it's like that one...) and can I quote you on that?"

I still have another year of warranty to go. Did you experience the 'clicking' sound when you had yours changed?

yes Victornga. When car is stationary, turn left and right and then the centers it, you will hear a clicking sound.

Sent my car for regular service at Ingress Auto Damansara 2 days ago and brought up this issue to the SA. A tester was assigned to test drive and check on the problem but came back to me with a feedback that the wheel bearings require some lubrication and they have done it. I insisted that it has nothing to do with the wheel bearing and refuse to collect my car until the problem was identified and rectified. A chief tester was then assigned to the case and together with myself, we went for a test drive and I simulated the "clicking" problem to him. It was then that they acknowledge the problem could be due to the steering rack or the motor that comes together with the steering rack. According to them, they have seen this problem before but quite rare. They are now writing to BMW for the approval to replace the entire steering rack under warranty. Hopefully the problem is resolved after this.
