Need advice urgently . Im going to do engine transplant very soon( my current engine is 318 m43) . need your advice which one is the best option. Im keen to change to 2.8, but one guy from potong shop advice me to change to 2.5, the reason, because of easy to maintain and cheaper parts and according to him best option to do conversion from 318i is to go for 325i. Im not sure?? need your help. FYI i dont mind pay higher roadtax as that one is only once a year, not big deal. i have checked, 2.5 halfcut is RM4800 and 2.8 is RM6000. The halfcut is complete with exaust, axle, long shaft, and other many thing.

have u considered supra's engine ijz 2.5L? i heard/read the jap's engine is cheaper to maintain and the halfcut is about RM3000 plus.

2.5 - 6 cylinders, M52
2.8 - 6 cylinders, M52
Maintenance wise would be the same. Go for the 2.8.

Corrected for you.

Agreed. I think most of the parts are identical so price wise there shouldn't be much of a difference.

The M52B25 is a weak engine, limited horses compared to the M50B25. Best bet is to go for M52B28, if possible get the TU with the ZF-5spd GB coz it can fetch a higher resale value in the future:

M52B25 2.5 L (2494 cc/152 in³) 123 kW (170 hp) @ 5500 245 N·m (181 ft·lb) @ 3950 6500 1995
M52TUB25 123 kW (170 hp) @ 5500 245 N·m (181 ft·lb) @ 3500 6500 1998 75 mm (2.95 in) 84 mm (3.31 in) 10.5:1
M52B28 2.8 L (2793 cc/170 in³) 142 kW (193 hp) @ 5300 280 N·m (207 ft·lb) @ 3950 6500 1995 84 mm (3.31 in) 84 mm (3.31 in) 10.2:1
141 kW (191 hp) @ 5300 275 N·m (203 ft·lb) @ 3950 6500 1997
M52TUB28 142 kW (193 hp) @ 5500 280 N·m (207 ft·lb) @ 3500 6500 1998

M50B25 2.5 L (2494 cc/152 in³) 141 kW (192 hp) @ 6000 245 N·m (181 ft·lbf) @ 4700 6500 84mm 75mm 1991
141 kW (192 hp) @ 5900 250 N·m (184 ft·lbf) @ 4200 6500 84mm 75mm 1992

hmm...i not remember the half cut shop name. if u coming from federal highway then u need to take Airport Subang Road, then go straight untill u find the T junction at Jln Sg. Buloh. On the junction u turn left. Then after 3 traffic light. u will find esso on ur left. the chop shop is just after the esso before petronas. petronas is on ur right.

there is 3 chop shops so far i found in kg. melayu subang. most of them give the same price for 2.5 engine auto(complete with front bonet and etc) RM4500. but i'm looking for 2.8 engine manual. :)

i will take some picture if i be there again next time.

Fuel consumption and maintenance for 2.5 & 2.8 should be similar.
You're already changing engine....I would get the best power I could afford.

BWM - Sheer driving pleasure :)

I'm daily driving an E30 ex-320 with M50B25 and its an absolute joy... But i guarantee you that you will ALSO NEED a BRAKE and SUSPENSION upgrade...Because a lightweight E30 with a "modern engine" does go...For those who know, I m the guy who got TJ's car, and currently in the process of refreshing it. So I can tell you how much everything needs to be tip top to take best advantage of the engine upgrade. BTW 2.5 is more than enough to put a daily stOOpid grin on your face... (2.8=overkill?)

2.8 is definitely not overkill  I'm sure soon you will be wanting more. Most of us are in an endless pursuit for more power.
The E36 is a heavier car so I would go for the largest engine possible. A manual box will do wonders too. Do note it is harder to get JPJ approval for increase in capacity over 25% though.

M50 uses cast iron block which is much more durable than the lighter alloy block used for the M52... And if u are putting in the M52, make sure u have the undertray splash guard in place to prevent water from being splashed from underneath onto the alloy block engine.. Sudden temperature change can warp or crack the aluminum alloy block....

Actually in term of mod potential, the M50 with the less restrictive OBD1 is better... FYI, read in a BMW magazine a couple years back that all AC Schnitzer inline 6 engines used the cast iron block of the M50 for all its bored and stroked engines in favour of the aluminum alloy blocks...

I'd go with M52 2.8L. I thought it was the N52 2.5L that you were comparing. If it was N52, I would definitely get that one.

But if both are M52s, then get the bigger one - 2.8L.

fabian, the undertray splash guard you mentioned is part no.1 here right.

Not #1, it's #9... the one directly underneath the engine.... All aluminum block engines will have similar tray ie, E39, E46 etc... The magneisum block engines oso should have that.. There are cases when the workshop remove the undertray and forget to put it back... So there will be cars running without the tray and the owners don't realise it..
