smell??? what engine smell? engine got smell one meh? :p

If you mean exhaust fume, then it could have leaked in from the rear trunk..
if you mean petrol fume, then better to go to the hypermarket and get yourself a fire extinguisher since it may be a fire hazard. Else get your fuel hoses changed... or check your fuel tank for leaks.

Still thinking what other smells can an engine emit......

dont think like a petrol smell lah...if i go slow its ok but you go above 40km you will get the smell coming in lah...very2 pening lah...im sure its coming from the front part..anyway need to get an insurance policy lah..hehehe

Bro,

Any answers to yr Q's yet. I'm driving e36 320i (1992). Engine smells coming thru air cond vent if speed goes beyond 150km/h. Any solution apart from drive slower?

If you on manual gearbox then I understand... it might be your cluch is about to wear off and slip happened. During serious slip (150km and above) the cluch will burn and produce burned smell.

your front fan cover plate in the firewall seal is torn, repair it..

yes pussy, could you pls elabotate on this. Am having the same problem e36 318 auto, fumes coming in when stuck in jam. I suspect the micro-filter, could it be this ? or something else - checked my vents at naidu - all closed on recycle mode. pls advice. thanks.

I think there is a crack at the top part of the exhaust connecting to the manifold which causing a leak. It is normal for E36 to have a crack there. I rewelded it for RM120.00 . :)

the last time i had the same problem, it was bad, till i open up the flap n seal it on my e34..

all models has this self ventilating flap that the air-con ecu will operate when your car is on or off, during off mode the flap opens up to dispell all hot air in the cabin pressure, hence the self heating timer work in colder countries.it also acts as freah air intake when u are moving.
sometimes, when u start or off the engine, you will hear some thing runing inside the dashboard. as for the flap, it's for the stupid parents that lock their children in the car , so no air to breathe, hence suffocation, bmw has this feature.

remember the police man and the woman that died in the e36 car ? the flap was open and it had a leak in the exhaust branch connection has what vllad has mentioned.
during long period of time, the motor worns out, dirt gets caught in the flap and opening apreature and air gets in.

solution ? remove the flap pin holder rod that hooks to the motor, clean and remove all dirt from the opening, secure it with silicone and duck tape. and it will be nice, but no fresh air intake.. when long distance, remember to wind down your window to let new air in..

regards.
