hi there,i just had my e34 (525i - 24V) service 2 months back. Just clocked around 3000km (normal town used) and the engine oil seems reduce around 2 litre or more as my engine oil sensor triggerring when turn off my car (new enginer oil sensor). I checked that no white smoke seems coming from exhaust nor leakage as change the oil sump gasket last year. Any other reason why the engine reduce so fast? If the engine really need to be overhaul, what is the best option:a. change to newer half cut engine?b. overhaul by changing piston ring, valve etc?how much will it cost for both option a and b (if anyone having any idea)?Kind advice is very much appreciated.Thank you,TC

sometimes its just the valve seals and you only need to do top overhaul.

I am using semi synthetic 10 -40. So, valve seal can be one of the factor for engine consume engine oil?

Open up the head then only you'll know the extend of any damage. Hopefully it's only the valve seals and you can do top overhaul...not very messy thing to do.

that oil should be fine with the engine you have, tot too thin you are using..

try using normal shell mineral 20W-50... see if the oil disappears...if yes, then it's your piston rings, if your valve seals, only morning cold start you will have the white smoke coming out, then goes away. If piston rings, blue smoke when you are driving, but on BMW's very hard to see it, cos the oil burns well..

Did you physically check the engine oil level using the dipstick rather than depending on sensor? If you top up to the required llevels and the oil level still drops after a daily check over five days, you should inspect around the engine and see if there is any oil leak around the engine.

If no leaks detected, then it would be good to do a compression test (ensure good PSI readings across all the cylinders and/or a leak down test at your regular workshop to see the results. If both tests show less than acceptable results, then got to crack open the head and inspect in greater detail.

i checked using the dip stick and found that the oil level drop below the upper indicator line. i had crack the cylinders one last year and seems all of 5 cylinders was showing good psi except one dropped slightly. So, can this conclude that the valves seal are not good?

Just got a quote from my mechanic. To: 1 change valve seal cost around rm 600 to 800; 2 overhaul cost around rm 7k; 3 Change a re furnish engine cost rm 5k. Any advice which the best? Thinking of option 1. Frankly I don't trash my car and I drive around 120 max in highway .

Should do another compression test to see if that lone cylinder has dropped in pressure even further. As the engine is old, it will most likely be due for refreshing of seals, gaskets, rings etc.

I never liked putting in a used engine as the internal health of it is unknown. If you are unlucky, you could put in the engine and encounter the same problem in the immediate future.

Is your mechanic sure the valve seals are the culprit? No point changing them out, incurring the labor charges and then having to open the engine again if the issue continues. Got to diagnose the it correctly first then crack the engine open.

thanks for all the tips. I guess I will hold back any overhauling or changing half cut engine until it get worsen. By the way, from my understanding. we are not able to tell much even we open up the engine to see if the piston and valve is still in good condition or not. The best way to tell is still thru the dip stick and milleage. Just confirm that the oil level should be on top of the higher level indicator or between the lower and higher level indicator???

wow overhaul costs 7k??? what are the parts to be changed?? I remember doing overhaul + stroker kit less than that...

It can be just a bad pcv.. I guess ur engine is a m50

true Alan, very true.. the oil consuming sometimes are not related to piston rings itself, other factors also could be it... must check all to be sure...

My M50 engine hv d same problem but not as bad, u need to 1st take care of the leaking part and incl. valve seal and valve cover gasket...easy DIY, pull the spark plug..chk if any is cover with oil.. u may hv to change the valve seal, in my case i found out that the tube from valve cover to IM is cover with oil..this tube normal will connect to a PCV as in other car but i can't find where is the PCV..., anyone care to point out please?
I intent to replace d tube from the valve cover to IM with a longer one hoping to see the gravity effect will reduce the oil consumption but my next project is probably to install a oil catchment tank if all fail.

Lately my E90 LCI ( 2009 ) has been consuming engine oil. Used 0W30. Now try 5W40 oil. Still monitoring. Need top up after 2000km recently especially an outstation trip like 400km. Any E90 LCI experiencing the same sympthom ?

Just a update to you guys. Previously i mention that my car start consuming engine oil and later water (even after changing the new radiator). Then sent to my regular BMW work shop in KL to do a pressure test but found leakage of water nor cylinder head. finally, I went back to Ipoh regular BMW workshop and they suspect my top engine block having hairline crack that cause water sipping into it as they found water in the engine oil. So, finally change the top engine block plus overhaul top block. Been 2 months plus now. All good now. Finally seems both my issue resolved...:) just a sharing...
