Hi Sifus,Need your help on your opinion about issues on my UDM. I think it is serious issue and want to gained more opinion before I would proceed with the next big step(meaning rob the bank and repair all the wear and tear on my car one shot). I own an 2002 E46 318i Facelift and below are the list of my UDM's 'obvious' issue:-1) When I start the engine in the engine is cold/cool/morning time, there is a loud knocking sound but lasted only 1-2second. This happen only when the engine is cold and doesn't happen when the engine is heated.2)After the car travelled for some amount of distance( 1 hour drive or more) and the engine get hot(not overheated but very hot), the engine oil warning(red) started to come out and can feel noticable vibration of the engine even when the car is stopped in 'N' mode ('D' mode is even worse). The thing is, the temperature meter pointer never move from the half point of the temperature meter and doesn't show that the engine is overheated.3) The car will get a 'diesel engine' sound when it hot. I have check and it's coming from inside the engine and not the pulleys.3) Is it normal if the engine oil depreciated(min level) after about 5000 - 7000 km usage from max level? I use MOBIL full synthethic engine oil. After reading the past post, I suspected the loud sound is maybe from tensioner and the diesel sound is from the alternator bearing... but I think it is best to get as much as info before I send my UDM to the hospital for surgery or the doctor may sent the janitor to do the conjob on my UDM without me even realize it. So please sifus and sifis, give as much opinion as you can... Help!!! Thank you very much in advanced.

asah, i think your oil is bad, or old.. it's common tradition for BMW services to have 20k km service intervals...

but, since your car is the 2.0 Valvetronic, this engines has quite a few common problems, ie plug coils, head gasket, etc...

get to a mechanic quick.

cheers..

I have refer this to my mechanic(by phone) and he say most probably is the tensioner issue but need to check furthermore. I'm outstation this week so only can go to the workshop this weekend... (T_T)... Thank you anyway for your reply..

Has gone to M-Speed to see Dr Ah Meng. A very good place to go for your BMW issues. Listed below are what the changes on my car:-

Valve cover cap - RM40.00
Engine Mounting - RM400.00
Lower arm bushing - RM350.00
Front brake pads - RM160.00
Rear brake pads - RM140.00
Brake wire sensor - RM80.00
Fan Belt tensioner - RM340.00
Fan Belt Tensioner Bearing - RM120.00
Labour - RM70.00

RM1700.00 in total... so plain water n roti canai kosong this month!! (T_T)

Have to do a long list of part change but will do on next visit... and will definitely do it in M-Speed USJ. Ah Meng is very good in person. They even take the time to wipe clean your engine when they're done(which most of the shop won't bother to do)...

Moral of the story - Please go and see your mech as soon as possible if your engine start vibrate abnormally because it will cost more issue than you think!!... (T_T)..

after changing so many, it your problem solve.

so what was your problem?

Most of the things that you change do not seem to be related to your problem.

Actually my problem start because of the engine bad vibration. This is due to the very bad condition of the engine mounting. My problem was not solve entirely but the changes is just to make sure my car survive until the next visit. LOL.

1) Loud knocking sound is solved when engine started in cold condition - coming from the tensioner & tensioner bearing

2) The engine temperature is normal for BMW actually. The engine oil warning is actually because of the faulty engine oil level sensor(will be change on next visit).Engine vibration solved after the engine mounting is changed. Ah Meng also do the engine timing for my car.

3) Diesel engine sound come from inside the engine and still a mystery as Ah Meng need to check the engine thoroughly and that day I came a bit late, so very limited time. Will do it next visit.

4) Engine oil depreciate issue comes from leaking that was everywhere(cause by the vibration) - oil slump, valve cover, hoses...etc.. There no major leak but still it cames from many places(will definitely do this on next visit).

Ah Meng give a tour on my car - even inside the engine and we found a lot of issue. The previous owner didn't maintain the car as it should be. The are a lot of carbon inside the engine - sign of a bad car services history, the hoses is in a very bad condition - leak only is covered by tip tape, worn bushes, worn mounting.. etc. I was too excited to get a UDM that i didn't check this important.. important thing properly(padan muka aku!!). So I'm sharing so any person want to get a UDM/car - not to do what i've do.. The condition is bad even Ah Meng suggest to change the engine.. (T_T)... we'll see about that...

look like a major works based on your description.

You still got a long way to go before you get the car in tip top condition.

I got the same problem on Knocking Sound at engine occur every morning when i start my car. Will send my car to check the tensioner and bearing too.

One word, Bayar Manyak Wang lagi. What to do, previous owner lousy. That is why market survey and proper inspection before buying 2nd car is a must, especially BMW. Along so many years of development and technology enhanced, bmw should be able to figure out the reliability of the parts which is more longer. Many friends was saying that Mercedes are much more reliable than BMW. :D

E92 320i (2010) or E92 320d (2010)

Hi..I am planning to bring back a bmw coupe m sport from the UK..but not sure which two of these models 320i or 320d is a better bet..

Both models comes with risk..
1. E92 320i - there is a very big and long thread in e90 post forum uk,(http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=136258)
discussing about what looks to me like a faulty engine design (4cylinder) mainly issue with fuel injectors/coil packs, ECU, software etc

2. E92 320d - there is nothing major discussed with regards to this model's engine reliability in e90 post forum uk.. but there is risk of using Malaysia Diesel 2M on a UK E92 320d engine (especially with the newer models with efficiency dynamics as these is made for Diesel 3M/4M)..I have been trying to look for any major complaints with regards to diesel incompatiblity but could not really find one..really hope if someone can tell me about their experience/problems/issue using a diesel engine from UK/Europe (which is specifically made for Diesel 3M/4M)..

I would really appreciate oppinions on which car is the least risky to bring to Malaysia E92 320i (2010) or E92 320d (2010) urgently as I am planning to purchase it next week.

Bro, I'm just curious, since there shouldn't be much difference in pricing, why not bring back a 335Ci, or at least a 325Ci, or their diesel equivalents if there are any?

Last resort, if you still couldn't decide what to buy, for about 10k Pounds, simply get a low mileage great condition pre-SMG E39 M5, many members would love to buy it from you hehehehe.

Last but not the least, this old thread discussed about E46 engine issues-lah. Please open a new thread ler....no gomen tax no service charge for opening new thread in BCM.

I say better buy the diesel ... There's quite a large numbers of BMW diesel owners in this forum ... Why don't you you start a thread in the E90 section i'm sure you will get a lot of feedbacks especially on the quality of diesel fuel in M'sia which is not that bad actually. You gonna love the torque the diesel makes
