I have recently changed the engine oil sump gasket. After about 2 weeks, I can still notice some leaking on the parking floor. Went to the mechanics today that did this job and true enough still some leak coming out from the edges near to the gearbox as picture below:

[/IMG]The mechanic put on some sort of glue (grey color) around the leak area to verify leaking source. After about an hour plus of idle engine run, still noticing some leaking not from the gasket but from somewhere between the engine and gearbox. He said it could be the seals between engine and gearbox and this job is very labor intensive to do since you need to remove the gearbox as well. Anyone experience this before?

I am suspecting the vacuum pump o-ring, item 3 below:

When engine is cold, stick your hand behind the engine, facing the driver side firewall and see got oil there or not..

I changed the o ring and the gasket. So far no more ugly looking stain coming out.

Thanks AB, checked the area as suggested and got some oil there. Leaking not that bad now, but for sure need to rectify this later on.

I guess the seals are giving out on me one by one. So far I have replaced the oil sump gasket and oil filter housing gasket.

Hi bro , good luck but if u can clear the leaking problem it's better ,because this engine is an air tight engine , it can disturb you car idling , just info all the best.

Nizan, I think mine also have the same problem. Thought the yellowish colour stain is from the ATF but having the ATF oil sump thoroughly check by Mscope last weekend, there is no sign of leakage from the ATF. So next is the vacuum pump and the valve cover.Still considering to change the whole vacuum pump or just the seal and o ring will do. Changing to new vacuum pump will roughly cost around 1.5 k incl labour.

E46 N42 vacuum pump cost rm750,can check around how much for N46. 1.5k sounds a bit expensive. Anyway crank shaft oil seal is another culprit for leak btwn engine and gbox. Changed it abt 2 yrs ago, parts is cheap but labor is expensive since gbox kena turun..have been leak free for 2 yrs....wonder what will leak next..

im thinking to buy a e90 320i 06'. did this 320i engine have design failure as ive heard too many cases of engine leaks? how about 325 engine?

I plan to change the o-ring this weekend, but not sure where yet. Any recommendation?

Nizan, from what i heard only few workshop have the repair kit. They should be able to replace the O ring. Others will ask you to change the new vacuum pump.

I would not call it design failure,it is just the engine uses a lot of rubber seals and gasket compared to perhaps a japs car. These rubber will fail no matter what u do. I have posted before the list of the things recomended to be changed or u'll have it fail one after another and some can be diy. I learnt it the hard way before...

Just replaced the vacuum pump o-ring today. Monitoring the leak from now to see if there are other areas leaking..
