can someone describe how the rear muffler for the 325i e36/e46 works?there is a valve designed into the system which i think opens up the other pipe(twin pipe design) at high revs.the valve is actuated via linkages by the vacuum dash pot connected via a sense line connected to somewhere?anyone?

:D i have read somewhere that the valve actually has several functions.one is to optimize the operations of the catalyctic convertor(heats it up quicker on startup),it also reduces noise from the exhaust though on my car it creates this tinny noise that spoils an otherwise nice note from the standard exhaust.lastly it is said to optimize torque at low to mid rpms..
well i'm changing my backbox soon..wonder how it will affect the exhaust system? :dunno:

Dont think the 325i has that. Only the 328i.
acutally, 323 and 328 only have a single pipe...325 and 330 have the dual pipes.

:D actually my 328i e46 has two pipes..but they merge after the cat/silencer and become one bigger pipe entering the backbox.
