Virgin post :))My family bought a brand new E36 320 sedan way back in 1993 and it was a very nice car back then. It stayed with my family for a whole 10 years, we renewed the COE (Im from Singapore :) ) and for the past 2 - 3 years, I've been driving it quite regularly and learning how to handle the car properly (my experience has mostly been confined to a FWD EK9-R)It feels good and the car is relatively reliable. It has not been into any major accident throughout its entire life and needless to say, the emotional attachment to it is great for me, my dad (who is a car fanatic too). The car has been very stock from day 1. Not that I've not been allowed to mod to but my dad has always been saying if I want to mod the car, it will have to come out of my own pockets.Recently the 3rd son in the family (The E36) is not feeling too good, theres compression loss in 2 cylinders and personally I feel that its time to take it up to another level after driving E46 M3s which belong to my friends. In fact the last time we took it up to Sepang, it was great fun although its quite a handful with the DSC turned off  The local speed shop specialising in Beemers have done a few of the E36 M3 conversion and they have been telling me its a relatively straight drop in without much headache compared to the E46 case. The issue that came up is cost and availability of the components required for the conversion. This bring my search up north to my friendly neighbours up north and I've been pointed to this forum by some fellow car owners who feel that I should get a 2nd opinion on this matter. So after the lengthyl background introduction....heres the main geist :1) Which workshop is recommended for this major heart transplant operation?2) Whats the cost involved?3) Components wise, is it available easily? The waiting time for the parts is like waiting for a kidney due to the small amount of people doing such conversions.I know this might not be the best option as some people keep telling me, want to drive an M3, must as well buy one lar!!!!! Financially its not feasible for me at this moment (im a young exec) and at the same time, this car has been part of the family for so long I feel that it deserves to be taken to the next level for the remaining 8 years of its life.Any help and suggestions is greatly appreciated!

go and save your money and once you saved enough, let's say RM28k or in SG12k, then we'll advise you..at the meantime work hard..

regards.

If I don't have the budget...i wont bother to ask for advice...

The reason Im not pluging immediately to do it in SG is due to the fact that Im looking for a second opinion.

anyway if really no choice, I'll just go for the 3.0 + SC option which is being pushed towards me by the workshop.

Should be easier to work around too

i really dont know how much a conversion would cost in singapore but if it's within your budget do it cos it'll be worth every cent and breathe a fresh lease of life into your ride. certain parts aren't readilly available but i'm told they are so in singapore. anyway, it's widely available through the net.
best you check however, the legality governing conversions in singapore as i am unaware of this.
a 320 with an m3 transplant - let me see - it's a bit like the old wife getting a boob job, full lips, nip and tuck in all the right places, etc etc resulting in putting sparks back into an old love with a fresh lease of tender loving care.
or in car terrms the same feeling you get plonking a 2 litre turbo engine into a 1.3 proton wira. yahoo all the way.

The 3.0 + SC option sounds good. To my understanding parts is cheaper in SG but labour is cheaper here in MY, but is it worth the hassle of driving to JB or KL to do the conversions just to save on labour? Or what if you have problems then you have to drive up often to rectify?

I hope that you keep us updated of your conversions as i am sure most forummers here would like to know how its done in SG. If possible the costing too so we can compare for anybody here who wants to do transplant, supercharging or turbo.

Good luck!

After reading through the updates and reviewing my options...

My mech have commenced on sourcing for the engine.

Its probably not going to be easy finding the 320BHP euro version and its definately gonna cost me an arm or a leg. I've been told to expect a lower spec version possibly even the US version (Supposed to be much much much easier to come by, hurray for Ebay!)

Waiting for a full breakdown of costs before deciding on the 3.0+SC or conversion option.

Will post an update soon

what about the legality issue with the LTA on the change of engine???
Actually the modders prefer the 3.0 S50B30 rather than the 3.2 S52B32 found in the M3 EVO... 3.0 is running OBD1 and 3.2 running OBD2. If you know this 2 terms well then u'll know that OBD2 is more restricted in terms of tunability. Unless u don't intend to mod further (how to say), then stick with the S52.. Else get a 3.0 and stick in a cam and chip..

the m3 evo has a s50b32 engine and NOT a s52b32 which is installed in the US m3.

Given up on the engine conversion...

If I want power..i'll just drop in the 3.0 and S/C it....

Cost / performance ratio, the SC one gives a better kick..
