Dear all masters, I was curious to find out the way to understand the engine number and chassis number from the registration card. Are all the CKD BMW having different kind of VIN from the usual 16 digit combination? My engine number is 8 digits, and the chassis number is 7 digits.

My CKD e39 also have different type VIN compare with those other spec e39. Even AB also can not decode my VIN, they said only the old system can decode the VIN.

Then do we have any solution to correctly interpret our numbers? I really have no clues on how to read my numbers.

I was renewing my roadtax via myeg this morning. Then I was curious over the numbers on my registration card. They don't look like VIN to me. And I was trying to plug in the engine number and chassis number on some VIN websites, they didn't recognize the numbers as well. So my question is, why are both numbers different from the regular VIN?

General/global VIN decode:

As you can see in the graphic above, the VIN is composed of six parts:

Make/Model: (Digits 1-3) This breaks out the vehicle's make, model, and manufacturer.

Vehicle Features: (Digits 4-8) These digits identify the various features of the specific model — trim specifications, driveline options, etc.

Verifying #: (Digit 9) Determined through a complex mathematical formula that relates to the other numbers in the VIN; used to verify that the VIN itself is not fake.

Model Year: (Digit 10) Represents the vehicle's model year, which is not to be confused with the year it was sold or delivered.

Assembly Plant: (Digit 11) An internal digit that shows where the car was built.

Sequence Of Model Production: (Digit 12-17) These digits indicate the order in which the vehicle left the assembly line. This is effectively the serial number.

Note: A VIN will never include the letters I, O, or Q because of their similarity to the numbers "1" and "0." BUt seriously, though: Who confuses a Q with a 0?

haywire, the VIN for CKD car is totally different, not start with Wxx..It is more likely AB coded the car themselves.

PM me your VIN, let me see how its formatted.

Anyway of course its different, only Germany-made BMWs starts with Wxx on the front, even American made starts with 4xx (see last image in my posting) so your Malaysian one would have something different.
