Was driving my car one day on the urban road, suddenly felt that my car lost power, trying to increase the gas pedal make no effort, felt like either I am out of gas or something wrong with my petrol pump. So, put on my hazard lights and slowly "glide" my car to the side. Not forgetting to thanks those we had honk me /starred at me for reminding me that my car is not speeding but gliding. :rock:Turn my key to Off and gear to "P", tried starting the car and yes it works. Checked on the petrol gauge and nothing wrong, is still half tank. So off I go and my car start moving again ....Thinking to catch up with all those we had honk/starred at me, depressing my gas pedal further and my car jerk for a while and felt like the previous problem unfold , before it could happend, the car pick-up and accelerated and managed to catch up all others and safely reached me.The next morning, while warming up my car, I could smear petrol at the tailpipe. Unburnt petrol. Was thinking in my mind "My e34 is requesting to see doctor again. WTF" :motz: , after about 5 mins, I drove and park at my usual breakfast place. After my breakfast, switch on and all usual lights light up without warning. but when try to crank it, it just could not start. You could feel that is definitely not battery problem but only fuel is not coming. After about half hour cranking, no choice but to call Tow service and sent to my mechanic. After checking, not fuel pump, not battery problem, so must be the ECU problem :burnout:. Luckily I had a spare unit. The Mechanic helped to swap it and immediately the car can start. Since last week, my car performance is so sluggish . Yes, can bring me from point A to B , but life without speeding, overtaking is so sad. The car is just like a 100 years old man walking with a tongkat.:slug:Need help ....... 1) how to identify the ECU is for M50b20 or M50b25 ?2) wat about the chip ? any number to tell if it is for b20 or b25 ?3) what is the cost for the ECU , new ? used ?I need my life back ........... :smokin:Cheers !

there is serial number on the ecu.. compare the code, then u can confirm whether it is for the same model or not..if it is the same, what u can do is to reset the ecu as follows:

1. dont switch on ur engine.. just turn the key to ignition mode
2. press the pedal for 30 sec
3. depress the pedal
4. turn on ur engine

u can feel the diffrent!

albert, check the following:-

1. fuel filter
2. fuel pump
3. crankshaft sensor

what is the part number of the DME module?

Normally, if DME problem, the self diagnostic check will not be performed during the first start up.

Is this the part no. BOSCH 0 261 200 402 ?

yup that look like the DME for M50/B25.

Bosch for M50/B20 is 0 261 200 172.

Obviously they are are not compatible (4 cyl vs 6 cyl)

But surely, you should know the number since you swap out the original ECU from the car.

How do we identify or check the engine type, year, country and etc ? I just want to make sure the engine and the DME/ECU matches.

That depend on the VIN number and the history of the car. If the engine is still original,
then the VIN number can confirm the make, year of the engine.
However, if the previous owner have upgrade or change the engine, it is quite impossible
to know what is the engine number.

But usually, if the car engine works well with a particular DME, you should always use back the same DME.

I have tried yesterday. No different !
But thanks anyway.

iT is touring model if I'm not mistaken.

405 is non vanos model i guess. so get a similar chip and try it out. or get another dme to try out. maybe there's a problem with your dme.

How do I identify which chip is for which model ?

jarance gave a link to the website. it lists what your ecu code is for your model.

based on info posted by jarance from bimmerboard, it would appear that...
405: SOHC 6-cylinder
403: DOHC 6-cylinder non-vanos
402: DOHC 6-cylinder single vanos

u mentioned removing a 405 DME and replacing with a spare 402 DME. i'd imagine it wouldn't be optimal since significant difference between the SOHC and DOHC vanos engine.

I was using 402 until it became ko , now using 405 DME causing my ride to be slow response ........upon start engine, the error CHECK CONTROL appear.

From your info, that means I should be looking for a 403 DME instead ?!

just had anotherlook at info posted by jarance and realised its stated 405/403/402 all for M50 engine. wrongly guessed engines they're used for in my earlier post. keke. anyways, why not look for another 402 since that was whats in place originally? if can't find 402, i'd try a 403 next since it was used just before the 402.
