Hi BrosI find my e30 steering rack too unresponsive (turn-to-turn takes forever).I know the e36 rack has a smaller turning ratio - Is the e36 steering rack a direct bolt-on? otherwise what mod is required?Anyone has a thread showing a DIY on this conversion?thks

Not a direct bolt on, need to fabricate brackets and adapters.
btw, I have no issues with the E30 stock lock-to-lock ratio whether for track or drift.. Maybe I got used to it..

fabian,

I never got used to ANY car steering as it is not steering as fast as my kart....how ah? LOL

hi bro,
check with bro" chriseunos" for more info as he has done it. good luck.

For those who had done the E36 steering rack conversion..is there any slight vibrations when driving above 100 km/h?

Heard from my mechanic that our E30 can be upgraded with the E46 racks.

His logic was that since he had successfully transplanted E46 rack into E36, there's no reason why it cannot be done on a E30 as well since E36 racks can be fitted into E30 in anyway.

According to him, there's huge improvement in steering feel (turn-in,sharpness, etc etc.).

My information is that most E46 racks are the same as E36 in terms of no. of turns lock to lock (except for a UK 330 sport model which has a higher geared rack). Do a search on E30zone.net.

So unless you are getting a brand new rack, a chop shop sourced e46 rack will have the advantage of being newer compared to a used e36 rack.

I could be wrong though....:stupid:

i had been told that for m40 engine, no conversion can be done. is it true?

yes, can't be done due the diameter of the rack is thicker than the e30, further more the rack in the way of the M40 engine sump.

for the m20, direct bolt on...
