I've been quiet for some time now, which was mostly due to getting my life in order... settling down to married life, change of job, have a house to upkeep now so the UDM's been neglected for a long time. It was starting to show its age too, so I thought enough is enough and time to do some refurbishing before it rots to waste.

The hood was bubbling up, so it had to be sanded down to bare metal.

Rear driver's side door had a corner that rusted to a biscuit, so it was cut out and fresh steel was grafted on.

Various rust spots sanded down to bare metal and filled with brass. This process is called brazing in old school terms.

Here's the monster... a massive hole found behind the rear bumper. Didn't know it was there till the bumper came off.

Same hole viewed from the inside.

More to come...

i love it when old cars are given some tender love and care.
you're doing a great job, keep up the good work!

One week later...

Here's that hood again after bondo, primer and sanding. Basically you bondo (heavy body filler) the thing, then sand, then one coat of primer, then apply light filler which is the red stuff in order to get the surface really flat for painting. If you don't pay attention to detail at this stage, you get the dreaded wavy body panels.

Taking a walk around the car, checking out all the low spots that had to be filled in. These guys gave a lot of attention to detail, which is great although it sure took a long time. By this stage, it had already been 2 weeks plus without my UDM.

Finally, the car is all in one colour again...
I chose jet black for that badass gangsta look.
Black is also the most unforgiving colour to paint, since it will show any imperfections in the bodywork
so we shall see if all that earlier effort has paid off

These shots are raw paint, unpolished.

Teaser shot: This is the roof as it is, half-polished but can already see that the surface is very even and has a mirror shine. Can't wait to get my UDM back in one piece...

thanks you sir ...nice looking car you've got there ...the new skin is darm shinny ...what paint did you use ... care to share ..

Thanks, iceman

its PPG paint, colour Jet Black, its a standard colour offered on current BMWs
generally though, shine comes from the workmanship not the paint.

you should had just instead strip the whole car down as you never know if there is rust just around the corner ...

yep shine comes from the workmanship , but at times the paint too play some role ... etc the base coat , paint and the laquer ...

I think a full stripdown would be way beyond my means, both in time and money.
Just doing what I can afford to do.
As it is, the car's already been in the shop for a month but should be getting it back by this weekend if all goes well.
