Its hard to have superior handling and comfort in the same package. One trades off the other. The 1-series and 3-series are tuned more for handing at the expense of comfort. The 5-series and 7-series are comfort at the expense of handling. I find the 5-series very comfortable compared to 3-series.

Yup, absolutely agree with that! Tested the 545i recently - phuoh! Had wet dreams after that!

 Wet Dreams

anyways...what's with the sudden influx of the Volvo S40s on the road these days ah???Suddenly popping about on the road like mushrooms only.anyone care to explain what's so good or special about this caR?

IMHO the new Volvo V50 looks stunning...as compared to the S40. A little bird told me that it is fitted with a turbocharged engine or something in that respect...is this true???

Looks kinda like a Getz on steroids IMHO - no offence to any forummers with the One!
yea exactly especially the 3/4 view from the rear!

Why not subaru legacy gt? Test driven the car, better than A4 or 3 series IMHO.

3. Noticeable lag when kicking down a gear to accelerate quick.
How about when changing gears manually?

Sorry, haven't logged into the forum for quite a while.

For me, I feel a one-second delay when I manually up/down shift the gears. So, some anticipation is necessary when driving the car.

i was quite impressed with the new facelifted 1 series...the interior plastic quality have improved dramatically !! was looking at the 120i Sport 3-door recently and already salivating...hehe.
but then again, with rm224k price tag, i guess the VW Golf GTi could also fill in the space !

why buy levis when you want armanis.

i guess i went through the same thought process...

a4, s40, 1 series, or mini cooper s....it's used car for me though...

my deductions are....

a4 - love at first sight....love at 2nd sight, 3rd n etc etc...but i test drive the 1.8T vs s40...no where near the s40...a4 really smell smoke....it's just so responsive but handling wise...i will say they are both at par....but the new s40 model is coming up next year, 2nd hand value plunge at ridiculous rate, maintenance kills...that's why the volvo tagline is "for life". when you own a volvo, you better keep it for life...underwise, you will just get pennies back when u decide to sell...hehe

then came the mini cooper s...had the chance to ride it for a week...took it for a 200km/h spin...no sweat...a pleasure as i was on hols...but since it's a manual car...not too sure i am prepared for the daily ordeal thru city traffic on a daily basis...any minis without supercharge is just another car (sorry if i offend anyone!)

so i started looking at the 1 series...kinda have to agree with tensai & mini jeff...i like the front, like the back, but don't like when the front is pieced together with the back....just couldn't bring myself to doit....

so right now...i am just looking for a easy way out...2-3year old e46...ok for handling, ok on 2nd hand value, ok on looks, ok for everything else....sacrifices sacrifices...

hi everyone...i'm a newbie... :) cheers.

The 1 series is not that much bigger than the Mini. The A4 is due for a new model soon. These 3 cars appeal to different target audience. A4 competes more with 3 series and is for those that want a little bit more space. S40 is priced much cheaper and not a bad looking and handling car. However, compare with 120i or even the A4, I don't think S40 is as fun to drive. 120i is nice to drive and unique (much rarer) but you got very little space at the back, re-sale value sucks.

I also think that the Golf GTi is probably the better choice but not on the list.
