Here goes : Motor codes are simple, M50 .. Motor # 50. BMW internal chassis designation is chronological the postwar models of the 50s and 60s used a 3 digit designation with an "E" prefix, originating with the Isetta (E100) and progressed chronologically thru the prototype large 6 cylinder sedans(E126) they then revamped thier internal nomenclature starting with the production version of the E126 which were known as E3. The "E" stands for "Entwicklung", the German word for development. Every subsequent BMW model has been given a numerically higher designation at the beginning of its developement program including ALL the prototypes and concepts, hence the gaps in the numbering sequence, the "missing" numbersindicate the projects that never made it to production.Also, it is important to note that the E designations are determined chronologically based upon the date that developement model began. Not that date it was introduced to the public, thus a newer model may have a numerically lower designation than the one introduced earlier.Finally it is common practice for BMW to affix a suffix to the designation in order to denote a mid cycle facelift or a variation in body style or engine choice, eg. E24/1 is the designation for the revised version of the E24 6 series coupe based on the E28 chassis. (as opposed to the E12 based coupes) and E36/7 is actually the designation for the Z3 roadster which is mechanically just a variation of the E36 chassis.Lately however, BMW seems to be set on another change, by recently giving every body style its own designation, eg.
