Even my mechanic ask me to go for electric fan on my 325I '94.
He told me the engine will be more smooth ( no load ) but bad part is, the fan sound.. whhoooooooo ( like merc ) no more silent .. I dont know how true it is
Just wondering why the BMW Engineer didnt tought of changing to Electric Fan (should be a reason ). Even Old model Toyota's was using this technology but now they are using electric fan as well....
Sorry guys if wrong info... not sure
Im keen in the project too.. atleast if success I can curi the design...
LCP said:Only way to check is to do a simple lab-like experiment...
1) Take out the fan, or just the wiring, else get a similar fan to avoid all this hassle
2) Connect an ammeter in series with the +ve line (make sure all coils on the fan are connected/configured for full speed), and run the fan from a battery, it should run at full speed, read the current on the ammeter...

the charging of 11.5 volts is very low, so it chould be 13.5 to 14v.
now your car performance will drop, same story, since removing the clutch fan, you gain only 3-5hp and it get's sucked up on the low battery charging.. hence back to square-one..
some insight..
BMW engineers had the clutch fan for a reason, to dissipate the heat of the radiator and to cool the engine also, with the help of the a/c fan to asssit of sucking in the cool air during 'hot traffic jams'. BMW cars were made in Germany and for europe with the engine to suit the 4 seasons, Malaysia only has tropical climate. so figure it !!
the old school of radiators of the 80's and 90's engine is different of the latest engines which the fins of the radiators has been change to suit a electric fan.
the electric fans of the e60's run at 1500cfm, the e36's run at about 1200cfm's
also, without the fan 'shroud' the cooling will suffer.. did you that the wrong seating of the clutch fan with radiator of 5mm out from the shroud will result 'overheating' on the e36 and e34..
btw, enjoy the 'feeling' at the moment..E3six, dun worry i not marah you.. just letting you know that 'why play with fire'
regards.
