Hi Guys,As per subject above, I just got the car last 2 months..i've done basic service. I m just wondering..When is the best time to change? Any symptom?

Congratulations on your purchase of the E36 328. That's a powerful car and much attention should be given to pamper it so that it would serve you well in years to come.

If you know the history of the car, i.e. when did the last owner changed things like water hoses, thermostat, water pump or even flushing of radiator then it would be relatively ok to last 2 years from new. However, if you do not have any idea, then it would be best to change those items as precaution steps.

Do check out some of the threads posted here on E36 328.

Goodluck

haha bro... I have a DOHC VTEC (B18C) manual too... i must say it can gun down my 328 anytime, dead start, rolling start, top speed... but the driving experience tat makes the difference. both are from different parts of the world, just like having a asian or european on bed:eek::eek: hehe.. anyway enjoy ur ride bro!!:top:

I have also yet to change the water pump and am not aware of the car's previous history.

Just wondering whether thereare any tell tale signs of when a water pump is about to go. The last thing I want is an overheating incident.

Thansk

wholly cow, i just screwed up my post wt the pic, and cannot see the edit button... mod, pls help resize or delete...sorry sorry

hi anxiuos, i havent changed mine either as the car is still in perfect condi, but im sure its about time...if you read Lee36328 thread on his car, you can see some scary results of an old water pump, im looking to change mine soon...

cheeers..

cool JDM ride u hv there.. bro..my ride were CRX B16a....Anyways not much to compare..they have their own characters.:top:

Are there any tell-tale signs?

I had my water pump changed before. Saw green radiator fluid on the floor, i waited for the engine to cool down abit. Then I top up with water, drove straight to the workshop, making sure I don't make any prolong stops (like getting stuck in a jam). Once at the workshop, they confirm it's the water pump.

Hi Guys,
Just came back from my workshop to make an appointment this saturday to change my water pump.

As per my mechanic, He was saying that water pump only change when it leaks..Max 2 years.

Anyways, There is few option for me to choose:

Steel water pump: RM100++
Brass water pum : RM300++.

If got platinium better...hee hee

change to the brass one. This will last more than 3 years..
While doing that, check the thermostat and its housing.

Yup can last 2 years if the car travels reasonable mileage. For car which travels more, recommended to change earlier. Well, not sure abt BMW, but last time my Proton Wira's thermostat leaked when the engine is cold (so have to check the floor for coolant). Once the engine is running hot, it would not leak (that's one of the tell-tall signs).

Talking abt that, I need to change mine soon too...coz its abt time :) hehe

6622.. in the market, it's all brass made, coated in silver paint or brass colour. My advise i have tried the above all, after 6 months, the bearing sound came on and it made lots of noise like a conrod failure.

only now available in the market is the 'local' germany and the original BMW water pump, the stainless steel impeller sold those days are gone, but you might get it in Singapore.

the Local Germany is about RM152.00++ but with a plastic impeller that will last less than 4 months.

The original BMW is about RM496.00 (yes !!) with so called 'black steel' impeller. This will last you 3 years.

My opinion, it's not about the costs of the water pump failing, but the damage if the water pump fails when you are driving, i.e. cylinder head & gasket, mind you that the M52 alloy head and block is very sensitive to overheat. This will cost you thousands in repair bill.

regards.

---> yup sounds more like conrod sound when it's gonna fail ....

metal impellar will do ...

pussy,
Thanks for the info. Thats why mine now sounds like conrod failure sound and due to that i suspected my water pump its about time..:(

ICEMAN 13,

metal impellar will do ... (u mean the original BMW water pump?)

While we're on the subject of water pumps, has anyone tried Stewart High Performance water pumps? Is it available here anywhere in KL?

List price is roughly about USD190+.

hi guys,
I've change my water pump last week and my old water pum was plastic and still in good condition:rolleyes:. Anyways,Ive change to the metal/brass (KWP brand..If i m not mistaken)
The good thing was..The mechanic found out that my aircond compresor nut loose and been hitting the body. At least something that i found some potential problem to prevent.
My Cost:
Water pump:RM178.00
Labour: RM80.

And i found out that my front disc has been worn out and I've change it to Brembo disc + ATE brake pad that cost me RM550.00.

Total cost to build my confidence: RM880.00. :)
