dear all, while driving my car e36 328i tonight at jln kulim, the engine out of sudden died w/ all the light still on...so, I pull over to the road side, but can't manage to restart. The ignition sound like the other normal day, but seems like the engine spark failed to fire off. Checked the basic one,..... fuel - still half tankoverheat - temp gauge is at centerbatery - all the lights & radio are working finealarm - no abnormality, indicator turn green when unlocked, & red if locked tried to jump start but still doesn't work, called one nearest mech fren but raised white flag when heard it is bmw. Been stuck there for nearly 2 hrs w/ buddy...emptied my 14's Mild Seven which normally took me 3 days.:D At last, manage to get one tow truck and recommended to pull to nearest w/shop specialize in peugeot...... there goes my rm90 just for 1.5km distance.Called the mech and will give d key 2morrow....shoot, hv to take 1 day leave. so, pls advise on below concern......1. this is first time happened..is it a symptom to a bigger problem??2. what could go wrong w/ my car??3. can the mech specialize peugeot fix bmw? important notes....just done a normal engine service last friday and few wiring job involved, change bulb - rear plate# light & left headlight high beam, that's all!

Slightly off-topic but i think AAM annual fee is only RM60 one time tow aledi worth 1 year annual fee... and Kurnia Auto Assist is free for the first 10km and RM1 per km after that.. I don't have AAM but do have Kurnia Auto Assist, the towing services do come in handy... ;)

ok, back to topic.

Hard to say what could be the problem but fuel pump issue could be one of them. Sometimes it can die on you suddenly. The thing is that the fuel pump loses its efficiency gradually and to a certain point would just fail.

Could be other causes too which would need a mechanic to properly diagnose.

I had similar problem but not while diriving. Final dignostic proved, the fuel pump faulty and replaced it.

Does the car start at all? If it does and then dies off soon after....then

check alternator......which gives the car the electrical juice it needs to keep engine turning and also charges the battery which is only used at starting.

If it does not start at all, fuel pump is possiblity.

keep us posted.

crankshaft sensor lah.. when crankshaft sensor fail, it will automactically cut off the fuel and ignition coil..

there is a shop in Kulim where they specilaize in BMW. Name is H-2B.. Ask the JB guys about the place. No bad.

Anyone can give me the contact of this workshop in kulim? No harm knowing additional bimmer workshop around.

mienoz, need more info from you dude.

Does it crank at all? Or just a click sound?? If only a click sound then its a battery related problem.

If it cranks, and runs for a couple seconds then it could be a fuel pump problem. If it cranks without any signs of ignition, then it could be the timing/crank sensor.

well guys, let the chapter continue and mystery will be revealed....:D

today, take an emergency leave...went to the w/shop (specialize in peugeot & citroen) which I left my car last night, that mech was totally hopeless, in fact didnt dare to touch anything...doh, I was stumbled!!

so, no other choice except to bring to happy motor, so called the tow guy again but he's not around...he recommended the other guy which charge me rm100 for the happy ride....so, there it goes, tailing my udm w/ new plate# "ON TOW"....

so, to cut the story short.......u know what went wrong?..he he...ta daaa!! the pump fuel fuse faulty which aboslutely nothing came across in my mind!!, ....ceh, even the extra fuse was there for us to change on our own......its a 1 min job!!!.... , how stupid i am..have to admit it.

so, paid 'ah yau' rm10 for his very "tedious" job..anyway, he is the man, teach me a very good lesson which is...if anything go wrong, check the fuse box first becuase that is where bmw heart...electronic!!!

total damage
being towed - rm190
actual problem, fuse blow - rm10

learned new thing and admit own stupidity - priceless!!!

oh and yeah...the fuse blow due to fuel pump bounced back the electric source due to some choking.....thats what i understand.

so, instead of 10A, fuse changed to 30A to stand high resistance, but just get ready to change the fuel pump whwn totally kaput.....

Any side effect changing to higher Amp fuse?

10A to 30A???? that's a big jump... 15A oso not so drastic lah...

btw, it helps to keep some spare fuses in the car... I do... :)

yes.. the car will blow up..

I concur in a way... you might overload the wiring to the fuel pump, overheat the wiring, shorting it out and eventually start a fire, and depending on where the fire is... might go kaboom? There is a reason why the engineers had designed that a 10A fuse be used in the first place. Putting a way higher rating is not recommended. Did that in one of my ex-car and the end result was not pretty, well, not a full blown fire but I had to change some wiring loom. That is why that car became my ex-car, if you get my drift.

You mentioned "choking"? Have you changed your fuel filter yet?
