a friend of mine is looking at M3s.i'd appreciate it if someone can give me some quick and dirty watchouts when buying a used E46 M3 SMG?is there such a thing as an SMG1 and SMG2, and what's the diff?thanks in advance!redd

SMG1s were on the E36M3
SMG2s were on the E46M3 (much much better than SMG1)

I think there were a couple of recalls done on the E46M3, it depends on the build date and the main concern was for the bearings.

Other than that, the car should be fine.

are we talking about engine main bearings here? what are the symptoms and build dates affected?

thanks!

I cannot remember. U might have to do a google search to get the actual months.

It covers maybe a couple of months for the 2002 M3s only.

If the car you are looking at is a 2002, get the VIN number and get the service history from the dealership. It will tell if the bearing recall has been done.

I cant recall but its either the main bearings or rod bearings.

If it hasnt been done, then u can get it done/covered under the warranty.

symptoms are if u run the car HARD, and for whatever reason the oil levels get a tad bit low, you will hear a knocking sound from the engine. Its not a pleasant sound and the more you run the car with this noise, you'll get the bearing shavings in the oil can can possibly damage the engine further.

Honestly if you can afford the E46 M3, try to get the post 2004.5 models. It comes with the updated lights etc...
