Busted e39 (523i) transmission

I guess the title speaks for itself My mechanic just told me that it will cost me RM10k to have my transmission replaced (2nd hand) Anyone had their e39 transmission replaced before and how much was the damage? What a bad day ... sigh ...

Cadmus.. sorry for your box, but it was a lifetime gearbox as bmw said..

well check around the thread for other workshops that can source a better price.

i was quoted for RM6k for a recon 5HP18.. a higher price for 5HP19 box.

thanks for the reply fellow brothers. it's a bad case of transmission fluid leakage. the transmission still works fine but a little sluggish in the morning. the dudes at the workshop will be removing the transmission to have a closer look at the problem. It could be a warned out seal, keeping my fingers crossed the entire day. damns ...

just got a call from the workshop. they replaced a damaged seal and it's ok now. RM560 fix. phew ... what a relief.

ya cadmus tat day also my problem was my gear cant chge to 4th & 5th but when i sent to my mech he said mayb the solenoid prob but when he diagnosed eveli thg & flushed & chged the ATF, came out wit less than 1k then now eveli thg OK, good luck bro

engine overhaul?

saw oil stains on the floor again this morning. took my car to the workshop and had it looked again. now it's the crankshaft causing the oil leak between the flywheel and transmission box. mechanic told me that i'm looking at an engine overhaul (RM6k - RM10k). Anyone had any experience in having their e39 engine overhauled? Any workshops that i can go to for a 2nd opinion.

Ai yooo cadmus, your mechanic likes to give you a heart attack first then the good news, as in the case of your gearbox. Better to get a second opinion. Your oil leak might be due to the crankshaft/flywheel oil seal... but a PITA to change.

i can't agree with you more on the constant suspense my mechanic is giving me. i've changed the seal between the crankshaft and transmission twice, it's still leaking. tiap-tiap 2 minggu bocor, sigh ... 2 years owning an e39 and i've spent close to 30k in repairs (not including this upcoming repair job). me car has not been kind to me

here is the solution, trust me:
the oil seal he is put for you is a old version, sure to fail.. the new version has slip cone to slip the o ring without tearing the hymen layer of the ring..

got it ? it costs you RM180.00 each..

cadmus - when they replaced the seal, did they drain the box completely or just top-up? If it's just a top-up, there is no way of really knowing how much is in there in the first place, hence they could easily have over-filled it - hence the new leak on the front.

Btw, "lifelong oil" gearbox is anything but lifelong, still needs regular flushing and top-up for best result.

thanks for the heads up on the improved part. but which oil seal would that be? got the part number for the updated part?

cadmus wrote he replaced the auto trans oil seal earlier but on this incident his "mech" or rather should i say "conman" told him that he requires a engine overhaul to fix what seems like a crankshaft oil seal leak to me.

the oil leak is is directly below the front anti sway bar. the image (70.jpg) attached in the post earlier on will show you the exact position of the leakage.

as for the mechanic, they are pretty reputable bunch of people. plenty of thumbs up for their workshop too.

oh yeah ... i was told that the oil leakage is coming from the engine and not the transmission. the mech told me that the transmission fluid is greenish in colour and it's leaking engine oil (black in colour). sigh ... the leak is very near to the flywheel.

pussy: any workshop that you can recommend that i go visit? i was previously charged rm580 for the seal replacement. not sure if we are talking about the same seal. if it's only rm180, i got suckered big time.
