This morning I start and wait for the engine to warm with all windows opened.. And I smell like some rubber/brake burnt smell.. Just like what we usually smell while going down from Genting... I am aware bout the smell before this cus I thought it was the brake after driving and harsh braking.. But this time after warm up (haven't even start to drive) the smell came from rear wheel/engine (not quite sure but definitely that area) ... The computer shows everything is fine and I have no clue what's wrong that caused the smell...Hope the sifus here can give some idea what's happening.. TQ

You should kill the engine and trace the smell. Can be overheated wiring or burnt transistor. If overheated wiring, can be a potential fire hazard. How old is the car? Bring back to SC to check. Do not take such thing for granted, especially BURNT smell.

Can't agree more than AB. Better drive to the nearest workshop and get it inspected.

I had similar problem. I changed the oil in the rear axle and it was gone. You can ask the mechanic to check if the oil in rear axle is due for change before making a decision

Thanks sifus..

AB: it's a 06 320SE
Bytes: I've talked to a friend whois a mechanic and he said probably due to oil leak.. Cus I've found some oil on the porch and according to the mechanic the smell could be the oil burnt after engine heated.. His neighbor's bimmer also had similar problem.. will definitely bring to check and keep updated here..

I found the problem guys. Saw some oil leak accumulated at the bottom tray under where the engine sits. After driving a few rounds in my house area, killed the engine opened the hood. Guess what? White smoke and burnt smell coming up from the left side of the engine! And the oil leak at the bottom was dried out!

What the mechanic said was right.. It was the oil leak burnt after engine was heated.. Googled bout the problem and it's due to VCG, vacuum pump/vacuum pump o-ring, and/or broken bolts that caused the oil leak.

Any sifu here have any idea how much would replacing these parts cost?

Now it make sense, because the radiator fan is blowing, so it carries the smell to the rear of the car making you thought it came from the back.. :4:

Because of you, now I sniff the car every day.. it has slight burnt smell but don't see any leak, except the oil stain at the vacuum pump area. Checked the coolant this morning and saw the float dropped by about 5~6mm, I topped it up with BMW anti-freeze.

The following should give you enough info:
