BMW, the largest maker of luxury cars in the world, will build a new factory in China to meet rising demand, as sales of its vehicles jumped 37 per cent in the first 10 months of 2009. The new factory will come at a cost of US$732m, with the Munich-based company and its Chinese partner, Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Ltd, each contributing half of the investment. BMW expects an initial capacity of 100,000 vehicles by 2012, with the number eventually growing to 300,000. Capacity at their existing plant in Shenyang will also increase to 75,000 by the end of 2010.

Yup, I was informed of this when during my recent trip in HK when I met up with the China representative.

Bottom line is this, car manufacturers will only invest when there is a market for their products. This is something for our Goverment to ponder, whenever the NAP is revised again!

Cheers

VW to invest US$3.5bil in Brazil
Posted by: Anthony Lim
Volkswagen announced on Fri plans to invest euro2.3bil (US$3.5bil) in Brazil and said it hopes to be building a million vehicles a year in the country by 2014.

Volkswagen said the planned investment through 2014 is aimed at increasing production capacity and developing new models. It expects to produce some 800,000 vehicles in the South American country this year.

VW said it will expand production capacity at its Anchieta and Taubate vehicle production plants and at an engine plant in Sao Carlos. Brazil is the company's third largest market after China and Germany.

Volkswagen said deliveries to Brazilian customers rose by 70% since 2005 to reach 585,000 vehicles last year.

"The Volkswagen group will strengthen its leading competitive position in Brazil over the long term with these investments," chief executive Martin Winterkorn said.

"Brazil is one of our most important growth markets worldwide," he added. "We expect demand there to rise significantly over the coming years and we are now systematically adjusting our manufacturing capacity."

Volkswagen announced last week that it would make nearly euro30bil (US$45bil) in investments around the world to upgrade its operations and to modernise and expand its product range over the next several years. - AP

If Govt reduce the excise duty on BMW, I am sure the number of units on the road will increase. Our cost of car I think is within top 10 most expensive compare against income per capita
