Bro Vernon BMW E60lci Taillight Connector Burntout Problem

Bro Vernon BMW E60lci Taillight Connector Burntout Problem
Part 1

Here are some pics of a common problem on alot of the bmw E60lci, ie the melting connector for the taillights.
In most cases, owners only realise this problem when they are faced with mutliple failures for the taillight.
The culprit is usually the grounding wire.
Somehow it gets too hot and burns through its existing insulation, the connector assembly and finally the corresponding pins on the light holder of the taillight.
If left untreated, it will eventually burn till nothing's left of the pin.

Our approach to this problem is to reinsulate the grounding wire and with a much thicker insulation, ie many layers coating treatment.

We will be showing this in part 2 of our post where you will see the process be taken to treat this problem on Bro Vernon's BMW E60lci

Bro Vernon BMW E60lci Taillight Connector Burntout Problem Part 2

Bro Vernon BMW E60lci Taillight Connector Burntout Problem
Part 2

Our Liquid E Treatment.
We start off with an initial layer of insulation on the affected wire and treat it with an infrared lamp for the curing process. as it cures, the liquid E actually wraps around tighter.

Thereafter, we repeat the process all over again, adding layer by layer.
The end product, is a new skin, much thicker and better insulated then the original thin one.
Upon completion, it can be plugged into the light holder and as per our pic taken from Bro Vernon's ride, all the error messages have disappeared, no more fault codes.

Why do we do our Liquid E Treatment instead of changing the connector plug like most workshops?
Firstly, we take an educated approach to the problem.
The culprit is a faulty ground wire that is burning through its original insulation.
The best way is of course to replace the wiring harness but that would be very costly and most workshops do not offer this service. Even if replaced, there's no guarantee that the problem might not recur if its indeed an inherent problem with the harness or grounding.

Most workshops on seeing the melted connector would offer to change the connector, refit the existing wiring into the slot. Nothing is done to improve the insulation of the grounding wire.
Hence, with time, the same problem will occur again, burning through the new connector.
Its just a matter of time before that screen of fault codes pop up again.

Our school of thoughts is that we focus on the culprit and improve on the existing insulation.
We have did a few cases a couple of years back with 3m electrical tape when we did not have access to the liquid insulation. Now that we have it, we are using it to provide a more permanent, durable solution to this problem.

Bro Vernon is the 1st lucky dude to try out of infrared treatment on the liquid E, fresh out of the box.
Layer by layer, we let him feel for himself the new skin we were creating for his affected wire and eventually when we were done, he could see for himself that there were no more fault codes when he started the car.
