Just to share. On a Sunday quite recently, I drove up to Genting Highlands and back. Twice. Once in an E39 with Koni Sport in its softest setting and stock anti-roll bars. Then in an E36 with KW V1 coilovers and H&R anti-roll bars front and back. Both suspensions are not very popular among forumers here but they are among the best. Anyway, here're my thoughts:The Koni is just so comfortable, perhaps helped by the E39's very stiff chassis. I don't think it's any less comfortable than stock setup. Despite that, when you need to corner hard, it will do the job. Its depth of talent will reveal itself. It's impressive how a shock absorber so comfortable can transform into something that handles corners so well. Especially so when you consider the size and weight of an E39. I pushed the car hard into corners, trying to get the back end to kick out but the Michelin PS2 is too grippy and I didn't have the balls to go faster. I have had Bilstein B8 on the car before and the ride was jarring to me (no offense to anybody). I think Koni is a much better choice. I guess the handling could still be improved further if I had thicker anti-roll bar at the back. Or turn the setting on the Koni to a harder setting. In my current setting, it's very forgiving. The KW is harder, less comfortable. But the E36 corners so flat, it was amazing. Between the E39 and the E36, the smaller car is better at handling sharp corner because of the shorter wheel base. It had less grippy tyres and I got very close to having the tyres to screech in corners. I'm not sure if it's the car or the suspensions but I feel that the older car is more communicative. Better weight distribution maybe? Maybe that's why people say old Bimmers are more special. For mountain or winding road driving, this E36 with this suspension setup is definitely more fun. However, once I get onto Karak, the E39 immediately feels like in a class of its own. High speed cruising in comfort. Something the E36 is not capable of. Can't help wondering what the two cars will be like if their suspensions setups are exchanged. The E39 with KW and the E36 with Koni. In their existing setup, the E39 is immensely capable. Excellent long distance cruiser. Docile. Maybe even a bit boring but I think most people will like it. The E36 with KW is perfect for driving like a hooligan i.e. rempit weapon of choice. Heh heh ... What the E36 needs is a more responsive engine. If only it had an M54 ....
