Hi,my E39, M54 car's radiator is leaking again after less than 2 years, seems likely that the rubber seal is leaking, I will open the radiator later and share the info, d quality really sucks, due to budget constraint I have no choice but to continue with Behr radiator, I was quoted d same brand but made from different country, south africa vs thailand, which one shd i choose? not much diff in price.

Fom what i heard there's original Behr but made in China ... That one doesn't last long.

i just changed my e39 radiator, brand behr hella made in south africa. what do u mean by you have to opt behr again due to budget constraint? behr not oem? what other options do we have besides behr. and the rubber seal, which rubber seal are u talking about?

I went for Nissens they're not OEM to BMW but they specialise in wht they do

www.nissens.com
Bro B33, where to get nissens, how much it cost?

Huskar, behr is OEM, but already 2 radiators for d last 4 years!!, to see d rubber seal, u need to dismantle d L & R side black plastic which was clip to and form part of the radiator, both time R side leak, d long rectangle rubber seal probably shrink / harden due to heat and leak, both time i purchase fr BA, never ask them where was it made then, could be from d same source --South africa, so if i were to use Behr again, will pick Tom Yam country this time, if it is genuine product.
From my knowledge, there is another brand call nissens as mentioned above.

I am using Nissens too, so far so good.

Was told N is cheaper than B.

i see. perhaps the liquid mixture inside the radiator did not perform well as expected. that's what cause the high engine heat.

i read somewhere, rule of thumb is to mix coolant and water 50/50. since our normal e39 radiator's capacity is 10.5 liter, at least 5 liter of coolant needed for optimal mixture. i was also told by a friend that some high performance car even fill 100% coolant without water for best performance. no idea if the idea is technically valid.

I've also heard this "100% coolant" for best performance thinggy also before. Some are for it, some are dead against it - the reason our radiator use coolant AND water for different reasons. Water is to transfer heat . The coolant is to lower freezing point (not applicable to us) or raise the boiling point of the water. It is to prevent corrosion as well. If that is true, you have a system that will not corrode and will not freeze or boil as normal but not transferring much heat as well. Some do say that coolant itself is too thick and wont flow efficiently. Some even feel so with 50-50 with water and will add water-wetter etc.

Never had the curiosity or need to run full coolant. Maybe someone else who can share their experience.

True, coolant is actually made of glycol aka antifreeze.

Therefore the in our tropical climate it is not useful/applicable but could be harmful due to the glycol charateristic to actually increase the freezing point.

I normally mix my coolant 80:20 or even 90:10 water:coolant ratio

Cheers

i run a 70:30 mix, 30 coolant, so they dun thin out after 2 years. i flush the system every 2 years. it depends the millage the clocks, mine a average of 20K km's. a year.

by the way, mine is a V8, hence the engine runs very hot.

never put 100% coolant into radiator!, as mentioned by someone here, coolant is not efficient in transferring heat, in fact water is the best to transfer heat, however there r pre mixed 50:50 coolant in d market which in this case u don't have to mix with water.

Wish to add: I also have bad experience once B4 with my E34, leak just over 1 year after installed, i used coolant then, replace with another Behr, use distilled water, now already 4 years,no leak, both bought fr same source, so it depends on your luck, it is quality control problem, don't think it bcos of distilled water/ coolant/ pipe water as in my case it is not due to corrosion.

I was quoted $620 for Behr from Thailand, where can I get a Nissen, pls pm me. thank you

Macgy, sorry for late reply. If you have been in south africa, you will not choose anything made there if you have a choice. :)

Went to stuggard to buy the Thailand made radiator, the guy told me there is no Thailand made radiator, what is going on here? he claim his is from Germany, i don't believe him n ask him to show me.....sticker show from SA! I can't remember the joker who I talk to the other day, now they quoted me $635 instead for south africa one....Nia.......ma. I m trying to find Nissen tomorrow but if i can't get one then no choice, back to Behr from SA.
