this looks to be just the ventilation for gas/petrol fume. While it may not be affecting engine functionality, it should be checked to not cause petrol smell in the cabin or risk of fume ignition?

For emission standard compliance la.

Not for this country. Japan recond all have it. It's part of the EGR system (exhaust gas recirculation).

It is not an essential component and wouldn't affect your engine unless the broken component is leaking air into your intake manifold. That would affect your MAF sensor reading and engine idle.

Yes, for the M50 model it does. The valv e connected to the hose back to the throttle body for the petrol fumes to be cleaned off then suck in to the engine for emission purposes.

If the hose is cracked between the valve and the throttle body, then u have a air leak. Engine runs leaner. Also if the hose is broken from the canister to valve is also bad, the valve will be opened, hence drawing air which the petrol tank fumes needs to be recycled into the canister.
Note, our bmw's runs a sealed fuel supply. Air needs to be replaced into the tank when fuel is used up.

Thanks all for the info.

My car had a strange stall & hesitance at random the other night, but after restarting the engine it was okay again with no symptoms if its running rough or anything like that. Only after reaching home I saw the fitting was broken..
