Dear all,Can any sifu here tell me the differences between this 2 car because their price gab is about 10K. :dunno: Which 1 is worth to buy for daily use - no modification. Pls advise me something that i need to take note when i search for this car. Thanks!!

E36 was facelifted in 1996(or is it 1997).... so engine is different, i know at least one different la, timing belt (pre 96) vs timing chain (96 onwards........

I stand corrected, but I always thought that timing chain was introduced in M43B18 engines. Which meant that all 1995 onwards cars are already on timing chain.

I think the difference between the 96' and 97' 318i are only cosmetics, ie the kidney grill is slightly indented at the bottom for the 97', the repeater lights are slimmer and longer for the 97', the "T-shaped" gear knob was replaced with the "gun-type" ones on the 97', standard leather seats, electonic aircond, different rims design, steering wheel design. Well, that's about it, I guess. Guys, please add to the list if I missed out any thing or correct my observations if it is not entirely right.

1. Side repeater is diff
2. Kedney grill is diff
3. Air con control electronic vs manual knob
4. timing chain vs timing chain
5. there is more here and there...cant remember

So no regret getting a new model. Try to shop around there are some lower pricing for after 1997 model. IMHO, I would have regreted if i got the pre 1997.

So any difference in HP??? :D
same engine.. no diff in HP...

Unless u get the 318is M44 DOHC engine ... :D which is a NO on the CKD 318i..

So.... all sifu out there. For the benefit of Prince (and myself also), since 96' and 97' models are shodded with the same M43 engine, the only difference between the two models are purely cosmetics. Yes?

Hi Prince,

Mine (318i) was end 1995 version, wif non-leather seat, manual air conds, non facelift (I changed it to the newer later), both 4 wheels came with discs, and a timing chain engine. Will ask my regular bimmer service sifu (YAU) to confirm the engine model tomorrow.

Might wanna check out the rear brakes, pre 97 drum and after disc.
errr ... I think the rear drums are only on low-spec UK models. All CKD e36 318i have solid discs front & rear.

These are the added differences IF I'm not wrong .... :dunno:

mid-95 M40 --> M43
mid-96 digital air-con, pre-face-lift (my car)
late-96 digital air-con, only grill face-lifted (Alex'es car)
mid-97 digital air-con, leather seats, grill & fender signals face-lifted, gun-type auto gear knob

ok, here is the story.

the 1995-1996 M43 comes with analog aircon (with clutch fan). Not too sure, if it comes with the auto dimmer on the rear view mirror.

the >1996 M43 comes with digital aircon (with eletric fan) and auto dimmer for the rear view mirror.

The last batch of M43 comes with face-lifted grill, side repeaters, different rims (for comestics). Interior, it comes with 2 airbag, both sides got wide angle glass, gun gear knob, different model of gearbox, leather seats.

Prince, if i were you, go for the M43 with the digital aircon (regardless of years).
