The e60 I recently purchased came with 19" rims(style 135? not sure) on 245/40/19 front and 275/35/19 rear. The ride is somewhat harsh/hard. If I were to swap with someone running the same style rims but 18", will there be a significant difference in ride comfort? Your expert views appreciated as I intend to change tyres in a few months and the price can be quite different between 18" and 19". Forgive me if this has been asked before.

Yes.
With thicker sidewall on tires, there will be more buffer for "cushion", thus a more comfortable ride.
But you will have slightly decrease in "tires performance" during corner. :)

I have the same scenario. Now using 245/40/18 for both front and rear. The comfort is definitely improve with 18". However, the stability on the cornering (sharp turn) had significantly reduced. Still miss that handling!

Another advantage to consider is we can swap the same size Tyre for front and rear. Hence, expect better mileage (better life span for tyre).

so conclusion, look and comfort dun come together? need to decide on which to keep and lose. but of course 19' look more garang

Thanks for all your views.

Chanbc, my 19" front is also on 245/40 tires right now so wouldn't that have the same level of ride comfort as your 18" as the sidewalls are both 40? What tire sizes front and rear were you having before when you had 19" rims? Yes I agree having same tires all round likely increases lifespan as they can be rotated.

40 is the ratio, not the height nor thinkness.

example: The sidewall of 235/40/18 is more than 225/40/18

i read somewhere tht the side wall is 40 percent of tyre with (as for the above case) correct me if im wrong. ;)

WPC, I am not sure about that. I am using 245/35/19 and 275/30/19 previously. Now I am using 245/40/18 for both front and rear. I think If I can have a 265 or 275 at the back will help !

WPC, for your case 245/40/19 in fact has the same wall thickness compare to 245/40/18, both at 3.86inches.

Oh yar hor, the '40' is the ratio and not height. Chanbc, when you changed from 19 to 18, did you swap with someone or you bought the 18? What did you do and costs involved? I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons to have a better decision. I'm not sure what's the model or value of my current 19"(swap/sell?) and what's the best way to change. All I know is the ride is somewhat harsh and I'm not a hard driver so maybe should change since the tires may need replacement in a few months (about 40-50% left). Thanks.

WPC, I bought a set of replica for 2.8k. Trade in 19" for only RM500 (already crack). Change 4 Dunlop tyre. All in about RM5k.

for "look" and handling, go for 19". For comfort and economy, go for 18".

20" - OTT (rubberband)
19" - Tayang
18" - Compromise
17" - Ride Comfort
16" - Sprint

I experienced both 18" and 19". If you want to use 19" then use 19/35/275 on rear and 19/35/235 on front. I still get the comfort.

Thanks for all your views. When changing tires and/or rims, is there something that needs to be reset? Does that mean cannot just go to any shop?

ChanBC I sent you a PM.
