advice needed again. you see, i intend to change my tyres to 4pieces which going to cost me RM750 x 4 pieces. but in singapore, i had some lobang where the new sport rims + new tyres (newly taken out from E60 the moment it landed into owner hand) and it only cost me RM2, 400 (newy 17' rims + tyres). the question is:1) will you want to change it to 17" rims in singapore or just stick to 16" and change tyres and end of story?2) from 16" to 17" any factor change?(such as petrol consuming, slow speed such as meter showing 100 km/h but actual only 95km/h etc etc) usefulness of changing from 16" to 17"? 3) If change to 17" wat to consider? (e.g. 235/50 R17 95W, 240/35 R17 95V, etc. etc. etc) which one suit 17" the best for E60?? PLEASE ADVICE

PLEASE ADVICE

Just to share my opinion on this,
1. Many enthusiasts have commented that stock standard 16" rims are too small on E60? Does looks matter a lot to you? If yes, then 17" or even 18" are better looking. I'm sure you notice that there are many E60 running on 18". Even the new 523i are on 17" while M-sport is on 18".
2. Bigger rims mean bigger tyres thus, heavier load overall. How much more? You just need to weigh them!
3. Petrol consumption & performance (take-off) may suffer slightly but handling/cornering will improve. Some comfort will be taken away as the "noise/road response" will be higher especially when you ride through the "yellow lines" approaching toll booths. However with E60 excellent sound proofing, you may not feel it!
4. Also, you need to be more careful on potholes as it may dent your rims. Lower profile tyres will wear off faster too.
5. If you are putting the correct tyres & rims size, the speedometer reading will not be affected. Click here to check

6. I believe for 17" rims, the correct tyre size should be 235/45R17 or 225/50R17

In summary, is it the looks, comfort, economy or performance/handling that you are putting priority?

hi bro jerman,
thanks a billion for the advice and sharing with your experience. think i'll probably go for 17" since 16" really do look a lot tiny on my E60.

bro astroboy,
thanks a lot for the manual sharing website too. sincerely thanks to both of you.

Sorry a bit late in this discussion, but I too am at the same crossroads. Currently have the fugly 16inch style 134

that i can't wait to replace. been contemplating between 17" and 18". i KNOW the 17" would be just right for my 523 but 18" looks sexy. Question to Lancelot Adolph - before your 18" were you on 16" or 17"?? I want to gauge the comfort difference if it was noticeable. 1 option I am considering is this model

looks sporty yet subtle la. What do you guys think?

Chookleng - did you switch to the 17"? RM2400 rim + tyre is a good deal!

larger rims means more fuel to turn them......and in times of increasing fuel prices by our STUPID GOMEN - i dun recommend it.

One tip - choose rims which gives u a visual impression that it's on larger rims......then u dun pay the fuel penalty.

its your dough, my humble opinion.

I have the problem too. The 16" ori rims definately dont look nice and its too tiny. I am looking to on the M5 19" ori rims, nice and big. The problem im facing also the 19" costs too much, about RM13,000 but the 18" i was quoted at about Rm7,000. Both with tyres on. Is it ok to put on the 19" on 523??

19s on 523 is fine.

If you're changing rims should go for no less than 19", unless you're sticking with RFTs. Runflats on 18" is already a nightmare.

bro,
Jules comments above is correct! Putting the looks aside, larger rims & tyres will make your ride "less comfortable" and the road response will be higher. Having said that, I believe 18" for 523i is a good balance. Yes, 19" rims & tyres combo is high price but if you want to PLAY then you have to PAY:rolleyes:

There is another consideration - I was in the same situation previously - on stock 16" and managed to swap to a set of 17".

The problem is most newish 17" rims comes with run-flats. I don't know about u but my 16" rims were not on run-flats.

Changing from 16" non-rft to 17" rft will affect your ride comfort, cause more noise, vibrations (at least in my case, and cannot be balanced out) and at the same time affect your fuel economy. Those rft are HEAVY. And till today my mechanic is still complaining that my tyres are like 4 pieces of solid wood. However, I have the dreaded Dunlops, maybe if you get the newer generation of rft, they might be better.

I can't wait for the rft to wear out.... and change.
