bigger (and heavier) wheels also put more stress on the wheel bearings. and BMW's wheel bearings aren't cheap...
Stresses on wear and tear components not only limited to the older cars, even the later BMWs would suffer too when using too big a wheel..
BTW, 18" wheels were unheard of during the E28 era.. IMHO, classic looking cars shud use wheels from that period for the authentic looks. Anyway, aesthetic look is a subjective matter. For me, BBS basketweaves design is one of the best to suit the BMWs from that era.
