Hi guys I was contemplating changing my problematic engine to the M52B20 which is a 6 potter 2.0 engine. But during my surveys, I encountered someone who mentioned that changing to the M52 will make my car lose punch compared to my current M40 1.8. This is a shocker to me because I was hoping to get some better performance going 2.0. Is this due to the weight of the engine? (6 pot vs 4 pot) Should I get the M43 1.8 used in the 318is instead of the M52? I was going to do it this weekend! until this news came along!

M43 or M42??? the SOHC M43 is used in the local 318i while the DOHC M42 is the one used in the 318is and 318ti....

Between the DOHC M42 and M52B20... Go for M42... ;)

The M43 is also not a bad choice since it's a newer engine compared to the M40 and it's chain-driven instead of belt...

Thanks for the input Fabian

I was thinking of the M43 instead of the M42, because it has OBD2.

I know OBD2 cars perform weaker (to comply with the emissions standards) but that's why I need a good performance engine :)

"Between the DOHC M42 and M52B20... Go for M42... "

Any reasons why, Fabian?

Because reading the datasheets, M52 gives 150bhp and 190Nm vs M43 115bhp and 168 Nm, now I have no idea what this means, but seems to indicate that the M52 is a stronge engine?

M42 has 140hp on paper vs 150 for the M50....

and the E36 318is is touted as the allrounder within the E36 range...
There's oso the M44B19 with OBD2..

go for M50B25 with manual tranny .....

solve ur issue.....

btw i know got M52B28 n M52B25 but yet to see M52B20 yet here....pls advice ......TQ

M50? Isnt that an older engine with no OBD2?

The 318is engine looks awesome on paper.. especially the 1.9 one.
But I bet its damn rare.. and I've never seen the M44 before.

I found the M52 engine at kedai potong in Bukit Kayu Hitam imported from Japan.. aiya was damn tempting until someone mentioned 4 potters beat 6 potters because its lighter..

I think when comes to 1.8 engine we have to recognize that Fab is very well verse in this segment.

-As most of bimmer owner know M50 engine is one of the best engine ever design......Cast iron block wit aluminium head instead of aluminium block n head 4 M52 .......

Not really ...just the cost involve for 4 pots is lower in ur case ....

But ....if u looking for performance .........Forget about 1.8,1.9 or 2.0 ......Go for 2.5 at least wit manual box if possible or 5 speed auto

Good luck

I want to go for 2.5, but I think there's problem with registration with JPJ right? That means i gotta let go of my current ride and buy another..

M50 is a good engine, I know, I read discussions about converting the M52 to the M50/S52.. but its not OBD2..
