The means are already well covered on this thread. The E90 has a bi-xenon set up. And as explained, high-beam HID/xenons are 'activated' by moving a shroud or an aperture for full light output. Its the same projector/source.  The E90 also has a halogen high-beam source (the inner 2 lights). These are for passing lights (single pull back of the stalk) and also as DRLs.
